err a "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 27, 2001 - 11 Developer's seeking rezoning Plan for new IGA, CTC stores is submitted From page 1 The property is currently zoned for industrial use. A public meeting may be held by mid-April. The application has been referred to Jim Dyment, the township's planner. Scugog officials have requested fur- ther information from Stockworth, said Ms Coates. "We received it and advised them that we need additional information," she said. "It is significant, a fairly sub- stantial proposal." Stockworth has submitted a thor- ough application, said the clerk. "They've provided us with a num- ber of studies - they've done their homework," said Ms Coates. Stockworth vice-president Bob Carey said that the plan calls for the Canadian Tire and Sobey's stores to each measure approximately 35,000 square feet. Both stores will be free- standing, he said. The two restaurants will be both sit- down and drive-through designs. Mr. Carey expects them to be franchise fast-food outlets: Mr. Carey is hopeful that the project can proceed as quickly as possible. He'd like to see the plaza open by the end of the summer. ~ Stockworth has been working with Canadian Tire to establish a new store in Port Perry for almost two years now. The companies have formed a part- nership to buy 16 acres of land south of Port Perry, on Simcoe St. Canadian Tire would be at the north end of the property, with the IGA store just south of that, said Mr. Carey. This will be the second attempt by developers to construct a new plaza for Canadian Tire and Sobey's. A plan by another developér called for the two stores to be constructed just west of Port Perry on Hwy. 7A, at the site of the former flea market. Council made the required zoning changes, but were later told that the flea market site was not suitable. Also delaying a decision on the first site was opposition from the parent company of Reid's Independent Grocers. The company later dropped its opposition to the plan.
