The research team at Lakeridge Health Oshawa will be led by cardiologist Dr. Rakesh Bhargava and Andrea "McCallum, Research Coordinator. Four thousand patients admitted to hospital with - heart attack or angina may be eligible to participate in-the study. | Recent evidence has suggested that infection specifically with an infec- tious organism Chlamydia Pneumoniae, may play a role in development of cholesterol deposit in sjclujm ajulelals sfais|s Eft |R{A ejajnit|y Afvioln s|vieim Flajrinis clalnja sjefainjeje|s Afr le Hie|Rr oOfRIR gixjcli isle sft jsis}i |E]S olm|eln IAfo tw ia Ld cleje]s sjojriajs sjojaja Kiajuiejr Ajnjojuis pli |c MiAIALS EjnjajmieiL]s clajsii jujo nit jo AlBjcC A{RiT pltjLiajrie]s Blafajs Tiajrle|s njuiola Alc ju A{Ljoln]e eisjajfn tit |o}s siajLie]s pjAaimia understand _the role. of arteries and resulting heart attacks and strokes. All patients volunteer- ing to participate in the study will be treated with cholesterol lowering drugs. Half of the patients will get antibiotics one week a month for 18 months and the other half no antibi- otics. They will be followed closely for heart attacks and strokes for a two-year period. oa Dr. Rakesh Bhargava describes coronary arter- ies with cholesterol plaque as "a smoldering artery." "Infection may be the spark which ignites the fire and rupture of the plaque leading to angina and heart attack," he said. "The aim of treatment will be to reduce fat in the arteries and extinguish any sparks of infection." The Prove-It trial com- pares two cholesterol-low- ering drugs with estab- lished benefits in reducing evidence of recurrent angi- na, heart attacks and death - Pravachol and Lipitor. Additionally, to further infection in cardiovascular disease this study will evaluate the effectiveness of antibiotic Glatiflokacin therapy in reducing cardio- vascular events in combi- nation with cholesterol reducing drugs. Antibiotic Glatiflokacin is approved in the U.S. and several other non- European countries for the treatment - of pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis and urinary infections. Emerging evidence sug- gests that inflammation plays an important role in the initiation, progression and complications of hard- ening and cholesterol deposition. in arteries of the heart. ' Evidence is strongest for chlamydia pneumoniae infections. Epidemiological stud- ies report a more than two- fold increase in the risk for heart attack among patients which evidence of C. Pneumoniae exposure. More frequent exposure to chlamydia infections 'appeared to result in more significant disease. In addition, studies sug- gest synergism between infection and high choles- terol levels. The Research Institute at Lakeridge Health and Harvard Medical School Cardiac Research division a have been collaborating in research under the leader- ship of Dr. Rakesh Bhargava for the past decade, bringing advances in treatment of cardiac dis- eases at no cost to patients and savings for the health care system.
