McCLELLAND / PORT PERRY STAR By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star The hockey season screeched to a halt for the Port Perry Mojacks last Friday night at the Scugog Arena as they fell 5-2 to the Lakefield Chiefs, swept away in four straight in the opening round of the Central Jr. C playoffs. That Lakefield would win this series is not really a surprise. After all, the power- ful Chiefs are defending Ontario champs, and were wire-to-wire first-place runners in the six-team League this season. What is a bit of surprise is that the Chiefs turned aside the MoJacks in four straight games. At the outset, some observers were suggesting quietly that the MoJacks might just make a series of it '.- give the Chiefs a real run for their money by winning a couple of games, at least. They pointed to the fact the Chiefs lost several key players from last year's championship team, the MoJacks fin- ished the season on a positive note by grabbing the final playoff berth, and maybe the Lakefield boys just might be a tad complacent as they finished a hefty 27 points ahead of the MoJacks in the standings. And when Game One got underway up in Lakefield on Feb. 13, it looked like maybe there was a bit of truth in what those observers were saying. The MoJacks jumped from the starting gate with a lot of zip in their stride, the bit solidly in their teeth and quickly con- verted the energy and enthusiasm to an early 3-0 lead. They upped it to 4-1 in that first game by the mid-point of the second period and looked to be quite in control. MoJack supporters were wondering if their guys just might "steal one" right in the Chiefs' home arena in that first game. And wouldn't that throw a whole new light on a best-of-seven-series. But, it was not to be. An old nemesis show the patience of a champion, as they began to exploit that MoJack weakness by turning loose a superb power play that not only erased that 4-1 MoJack lead in Game One, but allowed them to romp to an easy 10-4 victory. Penalties continued to hamper the MoJacks at crucial times in the remaining three games. It seemed that whenever the Chiefs needed a "big goal" a MoJack would take a trip to the box, and bingo - - the Chiefs would click on the power play. A prime example occurred in the fourth and final game Friday night in front of a decent crowd at the Scugog Arena. After taking a 1-0 lead in the first on a goal by Darryl Rose, the MoJacks appeared determined to extend the series. The Chiefs got a couple in the second to take a 2-1 lead, but the match was still very much up for grabs. Then late in the frame, the MoJacks found themselves down two men and despite some strong penalty killing earlier in the period, the Chiefs are just too much when up five skaters to three. Sure enough, with 2.5 seconds left on the clock, the Chiefs Dave Lloyd put one behind lan Watson in the Mojack cage to stake his team to a 3-1 lead heading into the third period. And just 1:13 into that final stanza, with one of the MoJack minors still in effect, the Chiefs struck again, with the same Dave Lloyd getting one through the short side on Watson. When the Lakefield Chiefs own a 4-1 lead in the third period, they are not going to fritter it away. And even though Rose got his second of the game at 4:49 to cut the margin to 4-2, the outcome was pretty much decid- ed. Just before the mid-point, the Chiefs ran into some sin bin troubles of their own and gave the MoJacks a two-man that plagued the MoJacks in many games all season reared its ugly head -- unnec- essary and untimely penalties. it didn't take the Chiefs long to settle down, get their game under control and Port Perry MoJacks captain Shane Norton was presented with the Erve Downey Memorial Trophy last Friday night at Scugog Arena when he was hon- oured as the Central Ontario Junior C League's Most Valuable Player. In 38 games with the MoJacks this year, he scored 30 times and added 50 assists advantage for almost two full minutes. But the visitors refused to yield a power play goal. In fact, the MoJacks hardly could muster a decent shot during that EN for 80 points. Turn to Page 19 B.
