"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 27, 2001 - 19 Untimely penalties cost MoJacks in series loss to Lakefield From Page 18 extended power play. * Sensing blood and vic- tory in the series, the Chiefs did what all good teams can do -- put the boots to an opponent once and for all. After killing the two man disad- vantage nicely, the Chiefs talented forward Ryan Freeburn scored to give. his team a 5-2 lead that held up the rest of the way. Mojack's head coach and GM Murray Parliament, naturally dis- appointed at the series outcome, said the Chiefs are "an excellent hockey club. "I think we were able to be competitive (with them) up to a point," he continued. But he sug- gested that costly penal- ties played a big role through the entire series. "Il am somewhat disap- pointed in some respects," he told The Port Perry Star, suggest- ing that after the tough lessons in Game One about how penalties can really hurt, the team con- tinued to take them at most inopportune times. "That was the entire series," he said. He also suggested that perhaps it was the MoJacks who were caught a bit off guard for the series after going all out for some eight weeks just to get to the playoff dance floor. "Our entire goal since Dec. 10 (when coach Tom Thombury was released and Parliament took over head coaching reins with assistant Neil Evans) had been to make the play- offs. Perhaps there was a bit of a let-down after we accomplished that." Certainly there were - some bright spots for the team this hockey season. Climbing out of the dol- drums back in early December and qualifying for the playoffs was one of them. A six-game win- ning streak that same month was another. And certainly the fine individual play of captain Shane Norton can't be over-looked either. This talented, hard working Port Perry native was honoured prior to Game Four when League con- venor Jim Orr presented him with the Erve Downey Memorial Trophy as the League's Most Valuable Player. Norton tallied 80 points (30 goals, 50 helpers) in 38 games and took just 40 minutes in penalties en route to his MVP season. He is just the third Mojack to win the award since the tro- phy was established back in the mid-70s. The oth- ers are Brian Nicholson and Brad Menzies, which puts Norton in some pretty select company. Sadly, however, Friday night's game was the last ever for Norton in a Mojack sweater as he played this season as the team's lone "over-ager." As usual, he logged a ton of ice time, killing penal- ties and on the power play. He also had to fend off a couple of Chiefs who seemed determined to goad him into fisticuffs. And he no doubt badly wanted to go out with at least a goal. Late in the game, he dashed nearly 'the length of the ice with the puck, working himself into position for a decent shot on net. But Ryan Hogan stuck the big blocker out and deflect- ed the puck aside. Looking ahead to next season, the GM said it's certain that Neil Evans will return to coaching duties in "some capaci- ty." "We'll get a chance in the next couple of weeks to sit down and go over CMB registration's coming soon Cartwright Minor Ball Association is preparing for another great season of ball. As for his own future with the club, he said he expects to be back next year, but whether he wears both GM and head coaching hats remains to be seen. Also on the positive side, all of this year's team with the exception of Norton are eligible to return next year. Adam Jones and Darren Forbes would be the two "over- agers" playing as 21-year olds should they decided to return to the green and white. No doubt many of the "younger guys" from this year's roster will be back in uniform come training camp late in August and they will have the benefit of a full Junior C campaign under their belts.
