"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" APE A a Sea en Rh Seon LS TR SE PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 6, 2001 - 9 Students to fast 30 hours as part of fundraiser By Lisa McClure Port Perry Star Every two seconds, a child in a third world country dies from starvation. It's that kind of harsh reality that is encouraging students at Port Perry High School to take part in a 30-hour famine to help raise money for needy children around the world. Beginning at 8:30 a.m. on April 5, a Thursday, participants will go without without solid foods until 2:30 p.m. the follow- ing Friday afternoon. The stu- dents. began collecting dona- tions from the community this week, and will continue right up until the beginning date of the fast. The 30-Hour Famine is an annual global effort of World Vision, an international aid agency. It is estimated that 70,000 fewer people die from poverty each year because of the 30-Hour Famine. The money the students raise will be used to fund food pro- grams in Rwanda, Kenya and Sudan. Funds will also aid street kids in Cambodia and Romania. Even breakfast programs and projects for street youth here in Canada will benefit from the 30- Hour Famine. Hundreds of Port Perry High students will be eating nothing but popsicles and clear juices for 30 hours in hopes of exceed- ing the $6,309 that was donated by the community last year. In order to collect more than last year's total, the focus of the student organizing committee in Port Perry will be to get more people involved. About 200 took part in last year's effort. "The purpose of the famine is not only to raise money for hun- gry children, but also to promote awareness of global issues," said Ruth Knight, a student organiz- ing committee member. "As a school, we have an incredible opportunity to reach out to our global community." The organizing committee is asking local businesses for donations. of food and bever- ages to feed the fasting students once they have completed their fast. Donations of money from the community would be appre- ciated to help in this fight against poverty. Please contact Susan Ellis at Port Perry High School - 985- 7337 - to offer donations or to ask any questions ahout the effort.
