Spring registration was a successful venture this year and will continue. More details are explained later in the article. For the first time, Port Perry Minor Hockey (PPMH) fielded all-girls teams in the Ontario Womens' Hockey Association (OWHA). The girls and their coaching staffs all had wonderful years and no doubt the OWHA branch of PPMH will con- tinue to grow. Girls now have the option of playing in the all-girls OWHA, or in the mixed OMHA. The placement of a Tyke team in the Tri-County League continues to be successful. Next season, a new division of four- and five-year-olds will be introduced to skills devel- opment. The Additional Entry teams competed in the York-Simcoe Additional Entry League this year instead of the Victoria-Durham League they've played in previously. All of our No. 2 teams were more competitive in this league and we plan to continue competing there. Our No. I rep teams continue to play in the Lakeshore League. Registration numbers were high in house league this past season, however we experienced a shortage of vol- unteers to coach. This resulted in a number of Midget players being placed in the Bantam house league. While everyone was able to play, this situation is not the most appropriate. With the possibility of high numbers in Midget next season more coaches and trainers will be needed. It's very important these players have the opportunity to play, so we ask parents and others to find the time to contribute. Coaching applications will be available at the arena. The deadline for applications to coach a No. | team is April 6. Interviews will be conducted in late April and selections will be made in May. Anyone interested in coaching, assistant coach, manager or trainer of No. 2 or house league teams is also encouraged to submit an application by April 6. Selections for these positions will be made at a later date. As well as coaches and trainers, PPMH has a shortage of referees, particularly those qualified at the rep levels. Without enough local refs we routinely have to call refer- ees from out of town, which adds to costs and ultimately to registration fees. Anyone who feels they have what it takes to be a competent referee and who is interested in making money while being involved in minor hockey is asked to contact the director of officials development, Ted Howarth, at 985-4636. Registration for the 2001-2002 season will take place at the arena from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on March 23 and from 9 a.m. to | p.m, and 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. oh March 24. The fee will be: $345 for Midget & Bantam (born from 1984 to 1987); $320 for Peewee, Atom & Novice (born 1988 to 1993); $260 for Tyke (born in 1994 & 1995) and $175 for Mite (born 1996 & 1997). A $50 deposit per player is required, with the balance due by post-dated cheques for Aug. 15 and Nov. I. Juvenile players (born 1981 to 1983) are asked to sub- mit a registration form with post-dated cheques so we can determine early if we have enough players to field a team. Cheques will be returned if there are not enough players. New this year, registration will include team socks and team and individual photographs. There will be a late registration held in the fall, with the date to be determined and advertised later. Please note there will be a late fee of $20.00 added. Power skating will not be provided by PPMH this sea- son. Parents are encouraged to take advantage of any of the numerous power skating or hockey schools in the area. By not having power skating, rep tryouts will finish earlier and house league will start earlier. Tryouts for rep teams will start the week of Aug. 27, Turn to Page 23
