"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 10, 2001 - 9 Lions' program helps By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Eight children from Scugog Township will enjoy the trip of a lifetime next month when they board a plane bound for Florida. As part of Air Canada's Dreams Take Flight program, underprivileged, handicapped and terminally ill kids here in Ontario and across the country are given the opportunity to visit either Walt Disney Land in Orlando, Florida, or Walt Disney World in California. Locally, the program is sponsored by both the Port Perry and Blackstock Lions Clubs. Each Scugog club will send four children, plus an adult chaperone, to Florida on May 23. Bill Sanderson, a manager at Air Canada and national presi- dent of the Dreams Take Flight program, was on hand at the Manchester Hall last Tuesday evening (April 3) to inform the kids from Port Perry, Caesarea, Lindsay and Oshawa of their upcoming trip. Their eyes were almost as big as their smiles as they were told what their once-in-a-life- time trip will entail. 'The group will arrive at an Air Canada maintenance hanger around 5 a.m. on the day of their trip, before boarding a 767 air- craft. The plane will lift off around 7 a.m., and is expected to land in Orlando at 10:30 a.m. From there, they will travel to Disney World where they will have the run of the place until later that evening, and then - they'll wing it back to Toronto, where they are expected to land shortly after midnight. Everything from food to clothes to spending money is provided for the children. Each child will be outfitted in a t- shirt, sweater and hat courtesy of The Gap; McDonald's will provide the food on the trip down; and Shell Canada will fuel the plane. "There is no end to what we will not do to make these kids happy," promised Mr. Sanderson, a resident of Caesarea. "This is their day; whatever they want, we'll get it for them." This is the second year the two Lions Clubs have partici- pated in the program. The four children selected to make the trip from Port Perry were chosen by the Durham's Childrens' Aid Society. They will be accompanied by their foster mother. A consultation process was held to choose the four chil- dren from the Blackstock area, including input from Cartwright Central Public School officials.
