10 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 17, 2001 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" Cornish team's tops at DIECAST competition By Chris Hall Port Perry Star A team of students from R.H. Cornish successfully defended the Port Perry school's title during the recent DIECAST Techno Challenge 2001. Representing the local school at the event were Lisa LaRocca, an | 1-year-old Grade 6 student, and Grade 7 stu- dent Lauren, Guthrie, 13. They were joined by 13-year-old Robbie Bark, a Grade 8 stu- dent who was also part. of last year's winning squad. The annual competition, held March 30 at St. George's Ukranian Catholic Hall in south Oshawa, saw the trio from Port - Perry compete against 46 teams from 39 other elemen- tary schools across Durham Region. Sponsored by the Durham Industry and Education Council for the Advancement of Science and Technology (DIECAST), the event had teams compete in three differ- ent categories: brain energiz- ers, brain teasers, and a build- ing challenge. In the first two categories, teams solved a variety of acad- emic puzzles, and questions, while the last event saw them put their heads together in an effort to build a structure from materials that were provided them. The R.H. Cornish squad won the building event, creating a structure of straws strong enough to hold a washer. Their structure was the longest, giv- ing them the win in that cate- gory and enough points to win the overall challenge. R.H. Cornish finished with 221 points, good enough for first place, ahead of the team from A.G. Bell, who collected 208 points. William Dunbar Public School placed third with 202 points. - The competition was judged by local teachers, Durham District School Board officials and DIECAST mem- bers. The R.H. Cornish team was hand-picked by science teacher Cliff Moon. The three students will now move on to the next competi- tion, to be held May 3 at Iroquois Park in Whitby. There, each team member will be joined by two other students from their grade, totalling nine R.H. Cornish reps in total. Each group has already been given an object: they have to design, and work has - already begun. For that com- petition, they will create a pasta bridge, a ping pong ball launcher, and a mousetrap car.
