"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" EE PTE Ee La TT ae Te ES PORT PERRY STAR Tuesday, April 17, 2001 - 15 Mayor expects long process for CTC proposal From page 1 | could be a while yet before the store opens its doors. "There's going to be a long song and dance going on. We'll have a similar (public meeting) and then the region will probably decide to have a joint meeting between the municipality and the region, sort of an informa- tion session," he said. Whether the rezoning application is approved or denied, Mayor Moffatt expects the issue to go before the Ontario Municipal Board. "It'll probably be a year and a half or two years before this thing is sorted out, no matter the decision," he said. "If it's no, it's going to the OMB; if it's yes, it's still going to the OMB." Mayor Moffatt expects Loblaws and A&P, the parent companies of Reid's Independent Grocers and Mike's Food Basics - respectively; « to appeal the decision if the rezoning is granted. And, obviously, the mayor added, Stockworth will appeal the motion if they are denied. "The two (parent) com- panies will appeal it if they get the okay, it's almost a matter of prac-, tice for them. Whenever one gets approval, the other two will appeal. That's what's going to happen." All this delay and paper work could have been avoided had the two stores (IGA will join Canadian Tire wherever it builds) agreed to build at the Westport site already zoned commercial just west of town on Hwy. 7A, said the mayor. Scugog council okayed a rezoning for a plaza on the site of the old flea market a couple of years ago. "I'd like to see IGA move to the site we already approved. It's not big enough for Canadian Tire, too, but they could always acquire more land," said Mayor Moffatt. He also noted that some consideration should be given to reno- vating the existing Canadian Tire plaza. The Stockworth pro- posal includes a massive new Canadian Tire store, complete with an auto ser- * vice area: and gas kiosk, and a large new home for the Port Perry IGA store. Two free-standing fast- food restaurants are also in the plans, as well as additional retail space. Today's meeting is to be held in the main boardroom of the region's planning department at 1615 Dundas St. East on the fourth floor of the Land Tower at the Whitby Mall. ini a From page 1 ~ BassMasters Casting Kids program will also be a display of antique out- board motors and tackle, circa the 1920s.
