Politicians trade barbs-over farm fundin | 12 - PORT PERRY STAR, Tuesday, April 24, 2001 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" By Travis Gray Port Perry Star "Where's the beef?" and "Show me the money" are two popular catch phrases. Combine them, and you get "Where's the money?" which is what farmers meeting in Port Perry last week were asking. Last Monday's meeting was arranged by Dale Mountjoy, president of Durham Region Corn Producers. Its purpose was to update farmers on a wide variety of issues, pri- mary among them the fed- eral government's promise of $500 million 'in funding, and how it compares to subsidies provided to farmers in the United States and European Union. In attendance were fed- eral and provincial repre- sentatives, along with offi- cials from various farm 'organizations. To date, the federal government has not paid out the $500 mil- lion. "We expected answers last week," said Mr. Mountjoy regarding the government's tardiness. "It should be out in May." The funding is to be split between the federal and provincial govern- ments, with the feds pick- ing up 60 per cent of the amount. - However, instead of handing over its 40 per cent share, thé province' decided to up the ante in order to make "a state- ment", said Durham MPP John O'Toole. "It was a challenge to the federal government," he said. In response, Durham MP Alex Shepherd replied that $500 million is a lot of money, and that the feder- al government is concen- trating on debt relief and maintaining other govern- ment programs, such as health care spending. "We have to have a bal- anced approach to govern- ment," Mr. Shepherd said. WINDOWS & PATIO DOORS "We only have a budget for $500 million," the Durham MP said in defense of the federal funding package. Mr. Shepherd explained that before the $500 mil- lion was announced, there was no talk from the provincial government on funding for farms. Mr. O'Toole stated that spending the extra money "was a challenge to the fed- eral government. "I don't 'consider this to be a game," Mr. O'Toole said. According to the provin- cial rep, the province * pledged $70 million, but then decided to add an extra $20 million for a total of $90 million. Cheques have gone out to farmers, he said. The federal money is supposed to keep Canadian farmers competi- tive with their counter- parts, mainly in states that border Canada. Energy efficient windows reduce draft & increase warmth. Because they will sell it at a lower rate, we have to match that rate, so that we're forced to sell below the cost of produc- tion, but we aren't topped up by our government." According to Mr. Mountjoy, the U.S. and the E.U. are barely abiding by the rules set out in trade agreements in order to get . ahead, while Canada plays by the rules stringently. "Canada is becoming the boy scout (in interna- tional trade)," he said. "Take the 401 with the 100 km speed limit. The European Union and the United States are driving along at 119, just so they don't get a ticket. Canada's driving along at 80 or less." Keith Bacon, a former Scugog councillor, owns a cash-crop farm west of PORT PERRY EN Associates] i Greenbank and attended the meeting. "I think it's a better meeting than they have had, but we still aren't get- ting the truth out of the politicians," he said. Mr. Bacon said Ontario farmers are not getting the same value for their crop as what American farmers are . getting. Market Revenue Insurance (MRI) is mostly provincial funding and is designed to help with farmers' financial needs. Mr. Bacon said he received enough from MRI just to cover his farm's financial loss from last year. A new program, which has been dubbed "Son of MRI" is in the very early stages, and is designed to be an improved and updated version of the original program. Mr. Mountjoy said the new program will come into effect sometime next year. | oe COE FR NEUE CE | + PAYMENT PLANS ARRANGED +» EVENING APPOINTMENTS AVAILABLE + DENTISTRY WHILE YOU SLEEP * GENERAL ANAESTHESIA AVAILABLE +» SENIOR CITIZENS DISCOUNT [ NEW PATIENTS WELCOME y EFCC) 462 PAXTON ST.
