"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 24, 2001 - 3 Mayor hopes closure won't lead to illegal dumping By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Scugog's Mayor is hop- ing the impending clo- sure of the Cartwright transfer station will not mean an increase in road- side dumping. A proposal by the regional works committee to close the Blackstock dump has angered resi- dents, and has others worried that roadside ditches may soon be lit- tered with garbage as a result. "We are concerned over that matter," said Mayor Doug Moffatt. "But we're pretty tough on people who dump things on the side of the road." In fact, the mayor said township staff have dug through garbage in the past in an effort to find Moffatt information on who may have discarded of it. "If we can find any information on them, we can lay charges," said the mayor. The uproar over the dump's closure came immediately after region officials suggested a few weeks ago that it be Cartwright homes hit by thieves Thieves are continu- ing to target the Blackstock area, with the latest of several burglar- ies in the vicinity occur- ring last weekend. Durham Regional Police are investigating a daylight break and enter on Mountjoy Rd. during the weekend. The resident of the home told police that the crime occurred before 7:30. p.m. on Saturday, April 21, when the family was out at dinner. According to police reports, an -_ unknown number of thieves gained entry to the home by kicking in a garage door. Once inside, two. bedrooms were ran- sacked and a quantity of jewelry was taken. Scene of the crime officers (SOCO) took fin- gerprints and photos of the scene and police are. continuing to investigate. In a report, Durham works officials claimed that visits to the Blackstock dump were declining, resulting in the station becoming a finan- cial burden to the region. Mayor Moffatt argues that the number of visits dropped soon after the region imposed a mini- mum $2 fee at the dump. And shortly after that, the "It's 'a tough call to make; | don't want to see "money wasted and if municipality began offer- ing township-wide garbage pickup. BAF 7 RIVE] A there are slow economies there, then they should do it," said Mayor Moffatt. "But a couple of years ago they invested several hundred thousand dol- lars in scales and other upgrades to make the place workable, and now they're going to close it? | don't know; that's throw- ing away a lot of money." As for the future of the Edgerton Rd. dump, the mayor suggested that perhaps it could be used as a composting depot. There has also been some concern over an increase in fees at all the transfer stations across the region. Also included in the proposal presented by the works committee was a suggestion that the fee be raised to $5 a visit from the current $2. Only visitors dropping off recy- clable materials would be exempt from the fee. Favourite ~ Brand Names "Eventually it's going to be nine or ten dollars a visit, and the residents will be paying a fortune to drop off their garbage," said the mayor. He fears that visits to the Port Perry site may also decline with the fee increase. More discussions will be held on the matter, with a final decision on the future of the Cartwright transfer station and increased user fees by the end of May.
