Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce raised the issue at a meeting last week. "The shopping plazas are full of litter. How can we get the corporate sector involved in helping us clean up?" she asked. "How can we get the plaza owners to recognize the .value of cleaning up? A corporate challenge?" She said "it's our responsibility to co- ordinate these efforts, to show some ini- tiative in picking up the garbage." Regional Councillor Ken Carruthers agreed. "The township is filthy," he said. "The small plazas are a disgrace now, and they're making no effort to clean up... We have to make the effort on our behalf to get this moving." Mayor Doug Moffatt said "the town- ship needs next year to have a plan in place" to deal with post-winter clean up, as well as Earth Day and Pitch-In Week. Also discussed last Monday was the state -of the garden centre at Reid's Independent Grocers. - Councillor Pearce expressed dismay with the site: "It's a mess at the garden centre there," she said. "The store has been extremely successful and has Councillors want parks, plazas cleaned up grown in leaps and bounds, but (the garden centre) has sat in a ragged condition all win- ter long. "It's just a mess." Councillor Pearce den centre was ever in the store's site plan agree- ment, and if the township can do anything to get the Pearce site cleaned up. "It's supposed to be more of a tem- porary than permanent structure, but if it's going to be there it should be good looking all year round, and not just in June and July," said Mayor Moffatt. asked if 'the gar- Arthritis course offered .
