hatha Ecc tet ot a "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 1, 2001 - 15 Event's planned for mid-July Chamber, BIA unveil plans for 'Streetfest 2001' The efforts of both the local Business Improvement Association and Chamber of Commerce, who are working together to put on Streetfest 2001, were applaud- ed by council members last week. Scugog councillors gave the -pro- posed plan approval in principle, sav- ing their final okay until parks and recre- ation staff have an opportunity to look over the events planned for Palmer Park. At the April 23 meeting, council gave its okay for a number of road closures, which would see traffic re-routed out of the downtown core. Closures would see Queen St. closed from John St. to Water St., and further south on Water St. to Mary St. Other than the matters of the parks events, council members seemed impressed that the BIA and Scugog Chamber of Commerce, have come together to put on a mid-sum- Perry. For more than 30 "years; the Chamber had staged Festival SE Days, a carnival held Brock downtown for all but one year. During that time, BIA businesses became frustrated with the road closures and outside ven- dors. "It shows a lot of thought has gone into planning this thing together," Mayor Doug Moffatt said in praise of the plans mer festival for Port - for Streetfest. The festival will mainly be a one-day event, with most of the activities being held on Saturday, July 14. A concert will be held in Palmer Park on Friday (July 13) evening in the Great Blue Heron Tent. An antique show, hosted by the Scugog Shores Historical Museum, will be held in the casino tent on Sunday, July 14. As for Saturday, the downtown core of Port Perry will be busy with various activities, games and sales for festival goers. Clowns and other entertainers will make their way down Queen $t., a stage will be set up in front of the Port Perry Post Office for local talent, and inflat- able games will be set up sporadically on the streets and in Palmer Park. Local service groups will also have informa- tion booths set up. In Palmer Park, there will be plenty of kids programs (Teddy Bear Picnic, face- painting, and games), a Mutt Show, more inflatable games, and another concert at the Great Blue Heron Tent later that evening. When it comes to shopping, visitors will be able to sample from the best Scugog Township has to offer. "There will be no outside vendors, there'll only be Chamber and BIA busi- nesses. This isn't for anyone outside of the township," said Ms Brock. Councillors agreed to endorse the event in principle, and give their final ¢ . approval after parks staff had a chance to look over the plans. A strange thing happens when you don't advertise...
