"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, May 23, 2001 - 1 OMCRA offering paddling clinics before Canoe The Nonquon Just in time to help make a difference in your 2001 Canoe the Nonquon results, the Ontario Marathon Canoe Racing Association is providing a free clinic on the eve of the race. On Friday, evening, june | on the waterfront at the foot of Queen Street in Port Perry, you will find out that the major difference between the experts and the rest of us is not the racing canoe but rather the techniques used by the canoeist. A number of members of OMCRA will demonstrate marathon canoe racing tech- niques on the water, and discuss equip- ment and strategy on land. Among other things you will learn the following: o Learn what makes a canoe go faster, straighter, longer. o Learn how to outlast your friends in a race. ) o Learn the magical word HUT. o Learn how to have fun when your arms are falling off. o Try out a racing canoe. o Try out those funny looking bent shaft black paddles. o Learn'how not to fall out of a canoe. o Learn how to go around corners quick- ly (and there are lots of corners on the Nonquon). o Learn how to get back in a canoe when you have fallen out. Bring yourself, your partner (if you have one), your kids (canoe racing is for fami- lies) and optionally, bring your canoe and equipment. The instructors will have some racing canoes, paddles and PFD's there, but you may want to be critiqued on how you paddle your own boat. Or, you can just watch from shore and the comfort of your lawn chair. In either case, you will be able to translate what you have learned into practice the following morning on the Nonquon and Lake Scugog.
