This past February to cel- ebrate Guiding in Port Perry each girl and leader contributed a piece to our district quilt. Many of our Guiding experiences are depicted in the quilt from camping to singing to dancing to sharing and caring activities. Is is presently on display at the Scugog Public Library. Start a Friendship Join the Girl Guides in Port Perry Girl Guides promotes fun, friendship, adventure and challenges through new experiences. The program is activity-based and includes such topics as life skills, leadership skills, the environment, fitness, service activities, career sampling activities, camping and the out- doors. Guiding develops personal values and well being; self respect, and respect for others. It fos- ters cultural understand- ing and knowledge of the global community. Girl Guide leaders are all volunteers. Many of our leaders join to share in their daughter's enjoy- ment, others who don't have daughters join because they believe in our Vision that all girls can be a Members of Girl Guides-Guides du Canada (a vibrant, dynamic Movement for girls, shaping a finer world) and still others join just to be part of the fun. Women leaders enjoy a sense of belonging, the forming of new friend- ships sharing a common goal and the camaraderie of new life experiences. By spending time with the girls you have the oppor- tunity to help them gain skills, develop personali- ties and provide them and yourself with memo- ries that will last a life- time. Our leaders are com- mitted to promoting growth in Guiding in Port Perry. This year our mem- bership grew by 30 per cent and with that we were able to open one new Spark and Guide unit. Unfortunately we have some units which may have to close should we be unable to find women leaders. (Ist Sparks and 2nd Pathfindérs in town and the 3rd Sparks on the Island). We really are looking to open more units next year at all levels, but we can't do it without new leaders. (The Island needs a Guide Unit). Registration Formal registration will take place at Emmanuel Pentecostal Church on Tuesday, Sept. Il. Returning members from 6 to 7 p.m. and new mem- bers from 7 to 8 p.m. Sparks aged five and six - S.K. and Grade |. Ist Sparks at Port Perry United Church - Mondays from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. (need leaders - time and day can be arranged to suit new leaders). 2nd Sparks at Prince Albert United Church - Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m. 3rd Sparks at Scugog Island United Church - Mondays from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. (need leaders - time and day can be arranged to suit new leaders). Brownies aged seven and eight - Grade 2 and 3. Ist Brownies at Prince Albert Community Hall - Mondays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. 2nd Brownies at Emmanuel Pentecostal Church - Tuesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. 4th Brownies at the Scugog Community Hall - Mondays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Cancer Society fundraiser is June | Guides aged nine to || - Grades 4, 5 and 6. 2nd Guides at the Port Perry United Church - Thursdays from 6:30 te 8:30 p.m. 3rd Guides at the Port Perry United Church Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. Pathfinders aged 12 to 14 - Grades 7, 8 and 9. 2nd Pathfinders at St. John's Presbyterian Church - Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (needs a second leader). Rangers aged 15 to 18 - Grades 10 and up. Ist Rangers location and time to be decided by girls. Inquiring now will help us to provide you with train- ing to be best prepared to start in September. More formal training will take place in the fall but our present leaders are only too willing to sit with you now and explain all the ins and outs of Guiding. . 'Visit a unit to see what it is all about. We are also accepting phone-in pre- registration for new girl members. Volunteers needed for Relay For Life Volunteers are needed to help with the Canadian Cancer Society's First Annual Relay For Life Friday and Saturday, June | and 2 at Oshawa Civic Fields. Relay For Life is a com- munity-based overnight event in which teams of 10 to 12 participants walk, run or stroll around the track to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society to support research and community services.
