Duke of Edinburgh participants complete required hike On Tuesday evening an excel- lent organ concert performed by Dan Amorim on the new Rodgers organ at the United Church. A fine crowd enjoyed the wide vari- ety of music presented by Mr. Amorim. Refreshments and a fel- lowship time followed the con- cert. For the third consecutive year, Craig Paisley has received the award for the best "on the spot" news reporting at the Atlantic Media 2000 Awards ceremony held in Halifax recently. This year's award was for the Photo Journalism which involves report- ing, shooting and editing news stories. Craig's award was in recognition of his coverage of the ongoing Native Fisheries dis- pute. Congratulations Craig on your continued success. Stuart and Helen Dorrell, Annie Dorrell, Kathleen and Dalton Dorrell, Nancy, Heather and Janis and their families were in Belleville on Saturday attend- ing a wedding dinner and dance for Leanne and Kevin Moody who were married on the March break in Hawaii. On April 7, local participants for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's Award hiked along the Oshawa Creek from Adelaide Street 15 km. to Darlington Provincial Park and cooked din- ner for their practice hike. On May 5 and 6, the official 25 km. hike was completed hiking from Long Sault to Purple Woods. The weather and wild flowers were ideal. These youth should be proud of their accomplishments. This terrific bunch of kids was led by John Scott, Sandy Churchill, Liz Henderson and Pauline Langmaid. Congratulations to Heather Kubovic, Nicole Beechey, Erin Wylie, Kelly King, Janice Kadowaki, Mary Van Camp, Sharon Howart, Kaitlin Almack, Jordyn Clark, Taylor Churchill, Nelson Langmaid, Mitch Truax, John Marsh, Jamie Newman, Matt Rickey, Blake McLaughlin, Jeremy Morrison and Ashley Howart (practice for silver). Sympathy is extended to Cliff and Lillian Lockyer on the pass- ing of Cliffs brother Stanley Lockyer of Oshawa. The funeral service was held on Friday. Merrill and Jean Van Camp, BLACKSTOCK by hal 4 Joyce Kelly A Keith and Wilma Van Camp and Aileen Van Camp returned home last Monday from a most enjoy- able holiday in Switzerland and other European points. They attended the wedding of Myrtha Reiderer and Werner Stricker (Myrtha's father, Bernard, has worked for Merrill many years ago. Myrtha had worked for Dale and Janet for a summer as well as having - made several visits to Canada since). They had toured many points of interest on their holiday. They also visited Walter Steiger and his family. Of local interest is the passing of Berta Werry, widow of Ernie Werry of Enniskillen. The Funeral was held in Bowmanville on Tuesday. Sympathy is extended to her family as well as her many friends. Members of the Blackstock and Nestleton United Church are reminded of the special meeting next Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. to hear the report of the Search Committee for a new minister. This meeting will be held in the Blackstock C.E. Room. St. John's News By Andrea Weir Last Tuesday evening we entertained the Women of the A.CW. from the Church of the Ascension in Port Perry. A lavish pot luck was enjoyed by every- one. After supper Ken Carmichael showed us slides of birds, mainly warblers. I had no idea there were so many vari- eties. His pictures of these birds were marvellous. What a lot of patience is required to shoot them. Please mark the following dates on your calendar: June 3 - Rogation Service will be held at the home of Linda and Lawrence McLaughlin at 10 a.m. This will be held in conjunction with the Sunday School Picnic. More details next week. June 27 there will be a fundraising barbecue to offset the needs of the hospital chap- laincy. This will be held just north of the helipad at the hospital from 5 to 8 p.m. June 28 a really important date. Andrew Barlow will be ordained at St. John's as a Deacon. Further details will fol- low. Members of the Blackstock Agricultural Society are looking to discover how much interest there is in the community to hold an A.T.V. Pull using a small weight transfer sled. Contestants are required to make such an event come off. Please indicate to either Barry Van Camp or Gerald Kelly your interest as soon as possible so plans can be worked out. There were 12 tables at the Tuesday evening card party with the following winners - Verna Draper who also had the most lone hands, Marjorie Davies, Vivian Kidd, Kaye Brown, Muriel Butson and Chester Madson. Lucky draws were won by Marjorie Davies, Harold Crawford (two), Verna Robinson, Mary Henderson and Edna Manns. Last week | made an error in my column. | stated that Brenda Robinson, Jay Todd and | had a tour of Caesarea and visited Caesar's cemetery. Sorry about that. This week I met Larry Postill, director of 'public works, and we toured Caesarea, including the cemetery. May | say that | am very pleased with what he has promised to do for us this year. Blackstock Lions Club The big news is our car wash 'on Saturday, May 26 from 9 am. to 3 p.m. at All Flags Shell on 7A in Nestleton. The proceeds of CAESAREA by Albert Putsey this car wash go toward supporting Cartwright Minor Ball, so we would be pleased to have you sup- port us. Well, I personally should be so happy with Farmers' Night, bringing in about 25 per cent of the ticket sales. I was shocked that 135 peo- ple committed to attend- ing, but paying at the door, but just 107 showed up and paid. That means that the Lions Club had to cover the cost of 28 dinners. However, it was a great night, a great dinner, and Wayne Easter MP was a great speaker. Congratulations to Lion Chris Hudson on his birth- day, May 24. Caesarea Hall Board Remember the Putsey Park meeting this Sunday, May 27 at 2 p.m. in the park. Bring your camp chairs. Euchre scores for May 17. Carson. Mary Jean Till spoke on the U.C.W. Rally at Sunderland last week. Six ladies from Greenbank attended. There will not be any church service at Greenbank next Sunday as Seagrave Sunday School Anniversary is May 27 at 10 a.m. Greenbank folks are invited to attend. Greenbank Music Committee meeting will be Thursday, May 31 at 7:30 p.m. Greenbank Beef Barbecue planning meeting sponsored by the Stewards will be held on June 5 at 8 p.m. The May euchre was held Friday evening with prizes going to: ladies - Mary Jean Till, Norrine Cook, Muriel Gibson and Betty Stone. Winners for the men were: Roy Blain, John Cook, Don Geer and Lester Baylis. Lucky draws were won by Don Geer, Mary Drewery and Lorraine Geer. The evening closed with a social hour and a delicious lunch served by Anna Beeton and Wanda Foster. Next euchre will be in three weeks on Friday, June 8. Mrs. Ruby Beare was honoured to have the privilege of presenting the 40 year award for GREENBANK ~~ membership to her cousin by William Barr, Doris Hill at the Oddfellows Lodge last week. Greenbank Parks Playground Committee presents Auction 2001 on Friday, June 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Greenbank Hall (viewing starts at 5:30 p.m.). Featuring Neil Bacon, auctioneer. Some of the new items being auctioned are: dinner theatre tickets, Blue Jay tickets, Black and Decker drill, passes to the C.N. Tower, plus local talents and baking. There is something for everyone. Food bar will also be available throughout the entire evening. This is a fundraising event, there- fore cash and cheques are the only form of payment accepted. This week saw all new floodlights installed in Greenbank Ball Park.
