PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, May 23, 2001 - 17 Former offensive guard included on prestigious allstar squad By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Port: Perry's Mike Steele has been honoured as one of the best ever to suit up for the University of Toronto's Varsity Blues football squad. Currently head of the guid- ance department at Port Perry High School, Mr. Steele was introduced last week as a mem- ber of the university's All Century Team during a special gala evening May 16 at the Hart House. A total of 71 players were included on the fantasy squad, which was broken down into two teams. Twenty-seven former students were honoured in the Legends category (players from 1898 to 1950), while a further 44 alumni comprised the Modern (1951 to 2000) team. The search for the All Century Team began last year, and con- cluded at last week's sold-out Port Perry's Mike Steele has been included as part of the University of Toronto's All- Century Team, which recog- nizes the best to ever play for the school's Varsity Blues football squad. "The University began look- ing back at its 100-year history of football and wanted to create an All Century Team out of the nearly 3,000 students who played there over the years," said Mr. Steele last week. The team was chosen based on votes submitted by fans and alumni. "It's really quite an honour, it was a great night. You got to look back at what you and other players accomplished over the years," he said. Driver killed as tragedy mars Mosport weekend By Wally Nesbitt From Corner Five Tragedy marred Sunday's B.F. Goodrich Trans-Am race at Mosport as a multi-car accident claimed the life of one driver and sent a second racer to hospital in critical condition. Mike Gagliardo, 46, of Chicago, Illinois was transferred by ambu- lance to the Bowmanville hospital where he was declared dead upon arrival. Gagliardo was mak- ing only his fifth Trans-Am race start. The other driver involved was 25-year-old Gary Longo of Evanston, Illinois. The former U.S. Marine was in his rookie season in the Trans-Am series and was mak- ing his third race start. Although ' details remain unclear, it appeared that Gagliardo had contact with anoth- er vehicle resulting in a spin exit- ing Mosport's right hand Turn One. While stopped on the track, facing the wrong way, Gagliardo was struck by Longo's Panoz Esperante race car. The force of the impact sheared off the right side of the stricken car, and broke the vehicle's frame. The race was red-flagged as the drivers were removed from their cars and taken to the track's medical facility. From there they were taken to local hospitals, Gagliardo to Lakeridge Health, Bowmanville, and Longo to Sunnybrook Medical Facility in Toronto where he is listed in criti- cal condition, but conscious and alert. Gagliardo's death was the first fatality at Mosport since Manfred Winklehock was killed in August, 1985. : The race was restarted and eventually won by former series champion and Mosport race win- ner Paul Gentilozzi. Tommy Archer in a Dodge Viper claimed a deserving second place followed by the Jaguar of Johnny Miller. Two Canadians were entered in the contest with Charlie Webster crossing the line in 13th place and Ancasters Jerry Simmons taking the checkers in 21st spot. Mr. Steele was one of six players chosen who played dur- ing the 1970s. An offensive guard, he played from 1973 to 1977 while studying physical education and geography. A two-time captain, Mr. Steele was an All-Ontario allstar and All-Canadian allstar and represented Canada at a Can- Am game in Tampa, Florida in January 1978. He was awarded the Johnny | Copp Trophy as the team's most valuable player in 1977, and was Turn to Page 18 Mike Steele named to U of Ts All Century Team Brooklin opens up 2001 lacrosse season with a win The Brooklin Redmen trav- elled to Oshweken on Sunday (May 20) evening in a contest against the Six Nations Chiefs. The Chiefs went into the game with a record of 2-0 coming off two wins agaihst St. Catharines. The Redmen, meanwhile, were playing their first regular season game after a two week training camp that wrapped up May 17. Both teams were 'still putting the final touches on their rosters. For the Redmen, they were with- out starting goalie Rob Blasdell and a couple of others were out with nagging injuries from the N.L.L. season. The Redmen start- ed Phil Wetherup, acquired at the July trading deadline last year, while the Chiefs split the goaltending duties between Chris Levis and recent addition Pat O'Toole. oo The Chiefs set the tone early while the Redmen were still try- ing to shake off their bus legs. Goals by Matt Levis and Dallas Squire gave the home side a 2-0 lead with five minutes gone in the first. The Redmen struck back with two of their own on goals by Shawn Williams and Nick Trudeau before the midway mark to tie the contest at two. Two late goals by Jason Crosbie and Marty O'Brien allowed the visitors to take a 5-3 lead into the first intermission. The second period saw the Redmen strike first to increase their lead to 6-3 and the Chiefs went with Pat O'Toole in ret at that point for the balance of the contest. The teams tied the sec- ond frame 2-2 and the Redmen had a 7-5 lead in a close contest going into the third. The Chiefs got a quick goal from Peter Tavares to start the third and close the gap to one goal. Jason Crosbie countered for the visitors just before the mid- point of the final frame. The Redmen hang on to defeat the Six Nations Chiefs in lacrosse action Chiefs got a big goal 25 seconds later from Dallas Squire to keep the gap at one for the visitors. The teams traded goals during the balance of the game and the Chiefs had two possessions in the Redmen end in the last two minutes. They were unable to put one behind Wetherup and the Redmen held on to a 9-8 vic- tory. Referees Mowry and Vinson allowed the players to decide the contest on the floor calling only 11 minor penalties, six to the Redmen and five to the Chiefs.
