A : | i 18 - PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, May 23, 2001 n "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice Former standout guard named to U of T team From Page 17 also drafted by the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League that year. A year after enrolling in Teachers' College in 1978, Mr. Steele took part in a - Roughriders' training camp, but opted to pur- sue his teaching career. "lI wanted something to fall back on if the football thing didn't work out, but then | decided being a teacher would probably last longer than a pro career," he said. While he grew up in the Toronto area, Mr. Steele and his family moved to Port Perry 15 years ago to get away from the city. His two oldest boys are now enrolled at PPHS, while his youngest son attends Grade 7 at R. H. Cornish. "We wanted to get into more of a country setting," he said. "It's a great area here and we really enjoy it." In the 124-year history of the Blues program, the team has won four Grey Cups, two Vanier Cups and 25 Yates Cups (the Ontario university cham- pionship and former Ontario-Quebec intercol- legiate title). As for being named to the team, Mr. Steele expects to be included in some promotional efforts for the team and its new stadium. "I'm really honoured to be part of the whole thing. There are a lot of players who have gone on to pro careers who played there, and it was nice to see grandsons there who were collecting awards for their grandfathers who played in the 1920s. "It's quite an honour that I never really expect- ed. It's nice to be recog- nized." Scugog Duplicate Bridge Club results for May 16 Scugog Duplicate Gord Mori 60.
