th DR ue) ee SIR LE JER i rT TR, LE 5 rN - "ig "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 5, 2001 - Neighbourhood boys take up garbage patrol By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The task of cleaning up one of Port Perry's neighbourhood parks has been taken up by a group of local boys. While walking through Poplar Park on his way to and from school, Jory McLean took note of the amount of rubbish strewn about and decided to take | action, said his mother, Karen. "Jory decided one day that he wanted to pick up the garbage in the park," she said. "He and some of his friends walk through there on their way to (R.H.) Cornish, and he thought it should be cleaned up. "It was just full of garbage." Mrs. McLean found gloves and garbage bags for her son, who took it upon himself to clean the park. He was immediately joined by his friends, and the number of youngsters pitching in to help pick up garbage now numbers eight. "All his friends wanted to help out, so now they're all going over there and picking up," said Mrs. McLean. The boys routinely visit the park with garbage bags two or three times a week, and spend up to 90 minutes after school cleaning up. They've been vol- unteering their time since mid- April. "They're still going at it and they seem to really enjoy it," said Mrs. McLean. She held a pizza party for the boys last Tuesday at her Union Ave. home to help entourage them to con- tinue their hard work. She promised them a party after they managed to collect 10 large bags full of garbage. The refuse sits behind her home, awaiting a trip to the dump. "l think this is great; it's won- derful what they're doing. That these 10-year-olds are doing something to clean up the com- munity is wonderful," she said. "They seem to be enjoying it and it's a great little project for them." 1 : ¥ vi i -- 3 i $ 12 1 nod { . { pt 4] - Pitching in to keep Poplar Park clean is this group of young boys, who attend R.H.
