12 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 5, 2001 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Pay raise should attract more candidates next election From Page 1 paid out over four years, so that's an average increase of 3.5 per cent a year." The Durham MP con- firmed that he will vote in favour of the increase. Last week a report commissioned by the federal government rec- ommended that MPs should receive a 20 per cent increase, to bring their salaries to $131,400 from $109,500. Tax-free allowances for expenses would be wiped out. The report also rec- ommended pay hikes for senators and the Prime Minister, who would see his salary rise to $262,988 from $184,600. The wage increases are expected to be passed before the House of Commons rises for a three- month recess Friday. : PORY. BERRY STAR 28. Valentine's Day mo. 31. Like Jonah's luck 32. He noted that he's not in favour of MPs setting of their own salaries. In the future, raises will be tied to the Chief Justice. of the Supreme Court of Canada, said Mr. Shepherd. "The judge's salary is reviewed semi-annually, I believe, to provide for such things as the rising cost of living. When that too," said the Durham MP. As for backlash from the public over what is being perceived by some as a money grab, Mr. Shepherd says he hasn't heard much com- plaint. "I haven't really heard too much, no one's really asked any questions. Certainly there will be people who don't think it's appropriate, and of course there are people in Durham Region receiving significantly less money, so there will always been comments. "My answer is they should run in the next election," he said. In fact, said Mr. Shepherd, the pay raise should attract even more interest the next time a general election is called. "I look back over the years, and I'm still mak- ing significantly less than | did running my own pri- vate practice in 1993," said Mr. Shepherd, a chartered accountant who operated his own firm in Port Perry. "I didn't get into this to make money. There are some people in the House of Commons who are overpaid, and others who are underpaid. | believe we should pro- vide an incentive to get reasonably good quality people running in our next election," he said.
