"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June §, 2001 - § More than $30,000 raised in past five years Annual Sick Kids sale hits S11,000 mark in Scugog By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The fifth annual Sick Kids' Yard Sale held last weekend was a resound- ing success as the com- munity chipped in with more than $11,000. While the final figure was still being tallied, volunteer Heather Haliburton-Smith con- firmed yesterday that the two-day weekend sale raised approximate- ly $11,300. All of that money will be forwarded to the Sick Childrens' Hospital in Toronto this week. In total, more than $5 mil- lion was raised for the hospital last weekend during its annual telethon, said Mrs. Haliburton-Smith. "It's safe to say we made it over the $11,000 mark, and that's pretty good. We're $3,000 over what our goal was, which (7 zTglelel 0] Travel 1 (905) 985-7878 - Tol in 1-800-720-8790 LAWN & WEED CONTROL was to match last year's - total," she said. Adding in this week- end's effort, a total of more than $31,000 has been raised for the hos- pital over the past five years. In 2000, $8,347 was raised. "We had more people donating things this year and more people heard about the sale and came down to look around and buy things," said Mrs. Haliburton-Smith. The numerous volun- teers on hand also helped make the fundraiser a success, as did the local businesses who donated items, she added. "The merchants from around the Port Perry area donated generously again, and they helped boost the total through the silent auction and door prizes." yter Street PO rf i D¢ 1A" | DON'T BE DISAPPOINTED: RESERVE YOUR COPY NOW Organizers and volunteers associated with the fifth annual Sick Kids' Yard Sale were pleased with their work from last weekend after unofficial figures showed that more than $11,000 was raised.
