Over the past 2 weeks we have discussed making your own baby food, this week we will talk about storing the food. Home made baby food may be stored in covered contain- ers in the coldest part of the fridge for a maximum of three days. always remove a portion of food rather than feeding directly from the storage container. If you wish to freeze your baby food for later use here are two options: 1) Food cube method - Pour puree into ice cube trays. Cover and place in freezer. Once food is frozen, remove from trays putting into freezer bags that are labelled and dated. 2) "Plop" method - Plop spoonfuls large enough for a serv- ing for your baby onto a baking sheet. Freeze the plops and then remove, placing in dated and labelled bags in the cold- est part of the freezer (not the door or racks). Freezer Storage Times as follows - Vegetables or Fruit - 6 months Meat, Poultry or Fish cooked - 10 weeks Purees containing milk - 4 weeks (Louise Lambert-Legace, Feeding Your Child, 1982) For more information send questions to Box 5283 Port Perry or call 985-6946. *By Nutrition at Work, a group of Port Perry Dietitians providing individual and group counselling.
