Durham Region works commissioner Jack McCorkell and waste management manager Peter Watson appeared before the township's works committee Monday moming to present their proposal for the integrated collection of recyclables, com-. postables and garbage waste in Scugog Township. Currently, the township collects garbage and some yard waste, while the region handles blue box pick-up. The region has come up with a plan that would see the collection of garbage, recyclables and compostable kitchen waste combined into one contract. It is hoped that by doing so, the region can reduce the amount of refuse it ships to landfill to about 50 per cent, down from the 70 per cent it hauled to the Keele Valley site in 2000.
