20 «-PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 19, 2001 +. "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Takes advantage of pile-up Coppins nets first Thunder Car victory By J. Wally Nesbitt A full slate of stock car racing action sponsored by Scugog Island's Great Blue Heron Charitable Casino made it a sure bet that the fans got their money's worth at Mosport Speedway on Saturday night. The 25 lap ThunderCar feature was slowed by a total of five caution periods, includ- ing one red flag brought out by a turn two tangle between race leaders Craig Graham and Jim Blundell. Taking advantage of the late race restart, Don Coppins of Oakwood outran the remainder of the T.C. field, taking his first career feature win. John Carlisle (#39) crossed the line in sec- ond place, chased to the stripe by defending series champion, Terry Shaw. Rino Montanari's sea- son has come up all aces so far and the Uxbridge driver continued his streak on Saturday, tak- ing wins in all three of the Challenger class races. So dominating was Montanari's charge, he had moved into the race lead by lap eight after taking the green flag at the back of the grid and at the race end was a full straightaway ahead of his nearest rival, Kyle Donaldson. Defending series champion Mike Poulton struggled to a third place finish. Heading to _ the Modified feature, Larry Jackson and Darrin Wrigglesworth each sat with a pair of wins earned in the heat dash- es. Twenty laps later, it was Jackson who cele- brated with three of a kind. Taking over the lead on the second circuit, Jackson immediately found his mirrors full of Wrigglesworth's green #36 car. These two ran bumper to bumper throughout the feature with Jackson's Mountain Dew #29 taking the win by less than a car length. Dwight Brown in his #2 Speedy Auto Service car rounded out the podium positions. Saturday night's results from an incident filled Late Model finale shuffled the overall points standings in a dra- matic way. Al Inglis from Orillia went flag to flag for the feature win, chased to the line by Waterdown's Rob Munday and Gerry Wheaton. / But it was two on- track incidents by a cou- ple of Mosport regulars that primarily con- tributed to the changes. West Lee Talons had earlier in the evening scored two heat wins but a severe impact into the turn one wall ended his night in a violent way. And on the final lap, Port Perry's Grant Edwards slid wide in the last cor- ner while battling for a top five finish, losing several positions in the process and the accom- panying points. The Mosport Late Models now have two weeks off to prepare for their con- tinuing championship drive. Stock car racing action continues next Saturday with the ThunderCars, Challengers, Late Models and the touring Canadian Vintage Modifieds competing at Mosport Speedway while the Castrol CAS- CAR National Super Series headlines the rac- ing activities at the Mosport Raceway road course.
