The best in Ontario Dorothy Fulford honoured as "Towperson of the Year" By Chris Hall Port Perry Star In an industry dominated mostly by men, Dorothy Fulford has come out on top. For the first time in its history, the Towing Association of Ontario bestowed its highest award -- Towman of the Year -- to a woman recently, when Mrs. Fulford was presented with it during a June 9 convention in Milton. "They had to alter the name of it just a tad this year; they called it the Towperson of the Year," said Mrs. Fulford. A familiar face in Scugog Township, Mrs. Fulford has operated Brian's Towing with her husband for the past 34 years. Prior to this year, the award has only made its way into the hands of male tow- ers during its four-year existence. The winner of the award is selected from a short list of nominees who have been submitted to a committee made up of Towing Association members and voted upon. Former recipients of the award are also eligible to cast a vote. "I was just floored when they called my name; | was really flabbergasted. This is the highest award you can receive in the towing industry in Ontario," said Mrs. Fulford. "To be a woman and receive it is just mind-boggling. 1 don't know who nominated me, but I do know this is the first time a woman has received it." -- Mrs. Fulford was one of about 300 tow- ers who attended the annual convention in Milton recently. The weekend is com- prised of a single day of training, fol- lowed by the formal awards ceremony and then a day of fun competitions and demonstrations. Since starting up the family towing business in 1967, Mrs. Fulford has worked her way off the trucks and into the office, where she helps co-ordinate day-to-day affairs. : "I don't go out much anymore, but occasionally I do take a truck out if there is something they need pretty badly. Although I do go reluctantly," she said, noting that she's "seen enough" from her trips out to accidents over the years. Currently, Brian's Towing, which is located at 151 Reach Industrial Park Rd. operates five trucks of all sizes and employs 10 people in total.
