"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 19, 2001 - Could be here by this fall Downtown farmers' market taking root By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The idea of setting up a farmers' mar- ket in downtown Port Perry was revisited once again last week. Members of the township's economic development committee discussed the issue last Thursday, deciding an attempt will be made to establish a farmers mar- ket in town this fall. After meeting with various members of the agricultural community, committee chair Larry Corrigan said local farmers "are indeed in support of a town market". Most farmers would like to see a prime downtown location, but can't commit to a Scugog market this summer, said the councillor. "The former site at the Port Perry Fairgrounds is not attractive to them. They don't want to be there, and they don't want to be at the tourist centre," said Councillor Corrigan. Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce also spoke in favour of a market. "There is a definite desire from the public for a downtown farmers' market. | recognize that the agricultural community is busy, but I don't think that should deter us from proceeding with planning this," she said. Councillor Pearce proposed that the economic development committee pass the idea on to the local Business Improvement Association for endorsement, and get approval from council to use the municipal office parking lot on North St. for the market. It was also noted that the planning of a market could be the responsi- bility of the town- ship's new eco- nomic development officer, who will be hired through a Human Resources Development Canada grant. Most committee members were in favour of seeing a market operate from about 9 a.m. to noon each Saturday morning. It's hoped that a market would help attract local residents into town to purchase fresh goods and other items at downtown stores before the busy tourist traffic arrives. Stu Bennet, who represents the BIA at the committee, said he'd like to see some regulations to ensure that such a market wouldn't be turned into a down- town flea market. It was also suggested that local grocery stores be contacted to see if they would be interested in hosting a market.
