8 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 19, 2001 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" Pearce presses for redevelopment of existing plazas By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The idea of renovating the Port Perry Plaza was once again discussed last week, during a meeting of the township's economic development committee. Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce said she'd rather see existing sites renovated, rather than creating new plazas out- side of the current com- mercial area. Her com- ments came during a Pearce new IGA and Canadian Councillor Pearce said the current Canadian Tire store and other parts of the Port Perry Plaza could be renovated, which could possibly be turned into a new home for the local IGA store. "I'd rather push for redevelopment, opposed to pushing for new devel- opment outside of the community. I'm a propo- nent of redevelopment and not sprawl," Councillor Pearce said ing's meeting. "The plaza is extreme- ly dated, but there is commercial space there," she said. "Maybe there could be some changes made to it." Scugog councillors were informed last week by township planning consultant Jim Dyment that Stockworth MBG, the company hired to devel- op a new plaza for the Port Perry Canadian-Tire and IGA stores, is consid- NE WL ie BR recap of a public meeting held on proposals for Tire stores in Port Perry. "At one time I thought one location was best for the proposal, but that's not the nature of this community; big box store plazas are not in any vision of the future for Scugog Township or Port Perry," said Councillor Pearce. She said that if the township doesn't look at redevelopment and allows new plazas to sprout up randomly, "Port Perry will be the same as everyone else, and we won't be that special town anymore." Also during last week's meeting, Scugog Chamber of Commerce President JoAnne Cerovich said her organi- zation would not be in favour of the new Stockworth plan, which would see the two stores separated. " Certainly we would like to see one place (developed) and not a split," she said. "We'd like to see them together as one community."
