JoAnne Cerovich is By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The Port Perry Star Citizen of the Year Award for 2001 has been presented to JoAnne Cerovich, a resident and ambas- sador for Scugog Township. While relatively new to the area, Mrs. Cerovich has taken a keen interest in pro- moting the township since her arrival eight years ago. "We used to travel through Scugog on our way to the cottage all the time," said Mrs. Cerovich, who lived in the East Gwillimbury area before relocating here. "We loved the area and when we began looking at moving, it seemed like the right place to be." Eventually, the Ceroviches - JoAnne, Sandy, her husband of 24 years, and son Matt, 15 - made their way to the Blackstock area. "Certainly the Port Perry area and the lake drew us to the area, and when we began looking into the community we found Blackstock far enough out of the way but still pleasant enough," said Mrs. Cerovich, noting that the reputation of Cartwright's schools also factored in the family's decision. The family also relocated their busi- ness, Moon Graphics Design Group, which is now in its twelfth year. JoAnne and Sandy have forged a successful graphic arts and web design company which has thrived here. It was through their business that Mrs. Cerovich first got involved with the Scugog Chamber of Commerce. "I was in a new community and wanted to meet people and other businesses... | just wanted to get involved with the com- munity," she said. From there, her commitment to the promotion of the township grew. Mrs. Cerovich now finds herself representing Scugog Township and the local Chamber of Commerce - she is currently president - in a variety of capacities, working hard at marketing and promoting the municipali- She has been involved with the Tourist Association of Durham Region (TADR) for the past five years, serving as president of the organization for the last three years. As well, she has served as chairperson of the Durham Countryside Adventure, a . TADR subcommittee, for three of the past four years she's been associated with that event. Mrs. Cerovich also represents the Chamber of Commerce with the town- ship's economic development commit- tee. She also serves as office manager for the Tourist Information Centre, located in the old library building on Queen St. "It's the tourism aspect | like. | wear many hats when it comes to promoting Scugog Township within the region, cugog's Citizen of the Year Ontario, across the world and back again," she said. "I want to make sure Scugog Township is well represented at trade shows and other events like that. "I want to promote my cornmunity; this is where I live. I really enjoy my commu- nity and | want everyone to know how wonderful it is." Somehow, Mrs. Cerovich finds time to balance her business (she consults with the clients while Sandy takes care of the technical aspects), her commitments to marketing the township, and spending time with her family. "I can't really begin to count the hours I put into (promoting Scugog), but I really enjoy it, and that's important," she said. "It gets me out and meeting people in the community" As for receiving the 2001 Citizen of Year Award, Mrs. Cerovich said she was com- pletely surprised and taken aback by the award, for which she was nominated by her husband. "Iwas shocked; | had no idea Iwas nominated. | feel really honoured to be selected for the award and was humbled and speechless when (Star publisher and general manager) Don (MacLeod) called and informed me," said Mrs. Cerovich. "It's a great honour, but | don't do all this work for the recognition. I just do it because | love my community and the people, not for the recognition. The smiles from people make me feel good at the end of the day; my personal satisfac- tion is what drives me." Also nominated for the 2001 Port Perry Star Citizen of the Year were Marion Lee, John Lucyk, and the Port Perry High School OAC Business Administration Class.
