"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 26, 2001 - § Let's get ready to party! Canada Day bash set to go Don't forget your lawn blanket and some spare change when you head down to Palmer Park for the annual Canada Day celebrations this weekend. The Scugog Chamber of Commerce has once again made plans for the July | fes- tivities, and is inviting everyone to make their way to the waterfront park to join the celebration. The celebration will begin at 10 a.m. Sunday, when Durham MP Alex Shepherd hosts his Canada Day festivities. Members of the public are encouraged to come out and meet Sir John A. MacDonald (played by Dave Ellis), Canada's first Prime Minister, and War of 1812 heroine Laura Secord, who will be portrayed by Bobbie Drew. There will be no formal citizenship cer- emony this year. Free hotdogs, cake, soft drinks and flags will be available until noon. The entertainment resumes at 6 p.m. when live bands take to the Rotary Gazebo in Palmer Park. Following that, The Port Perry Star will make its annual Citizen of the Year presentation at 7:30 p.m. The fireworks display, which will once again be launched from behind Reid's Independent Grocers, will get under way at dusk. And, as usual, local food vendors will be on hand during the evening, and Chamber representatives will be selling a variety of childrens' games and other goods. There is no set admission fee for the public, but Chamber officials are urging spectators to donate some of their spare change to help offset the cost of the fire- works. They also encourage those in atten- dance to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets. Members of the Durham Regional Police Service, Police Marine Unit, Scugog Fire Department, and St. John's Ambulance will be on hand. Palmer Park beach The Durham Region Health Department has posted its first water quality wamings of the summer, and Port Perry's Kinsmen Beach is posted. The Palmer Park beach was one of two public swimming holes deemed unsafe to swim in by the local health department. All other beaches, including Lakeside closed by region Beach on Scugog Island, are safe, accord- ing to the health department. Each week throughout the summer, the Durham Region Health Department con- ducts tests at each of the region's 16 beaches. Water samples are passed on to the Ontario Ministry of Health Lab in Peterborough.
