Det. Doug Parker of Port Perry's 26 Division is the officer heading up a task force that is re-examining the disappearance of Jami Furnandez. "We are starting at the beginning of this," Det. Parker told The Star. "We are operating as though no pre- vious investigation had been done, and are starting at the moment she had last been seen." The last reported sight- ing of Jami was by a person who saw the young mother If you see this ex-sailor on Thursday 28th of June, please wish him all the best. towards Oshawa, where the young woman was known to have friends. Jami's mother Connie Magiag said the past four years have been difficult ones for her, and for Jami's young son Stefan, now near- ly six. "This was not like her" Connie said of her daugh- ter's disappearance. "She was headstrong to be sure," Connie said. "I didn't know a lot of her friends and there wasn't much time for her to social- ize, so | had a bad feeling right away when she went missing." Mrs. Magiag said her daughter assumed a lot of responsibility for an 18- year-old. who (Stefan's father) was and she never talked a lot about problems, except to say that it was hard some- times," Mrs. Magiag said. "I felt that she had been picked up by someone while she was hitchhiking." But developments in the case are beginning to tell another story. Det. Parker and his unit of officers have re-inter- viewed every witness from four years ago, and have developed new leads to fol- low. Five officers, three from 26 Division, one from the Major Cases department and one from the Intelligence Unit, are being overseen: by Homicide investigators. They have turned up a critical new piece of evidence, said Det. Parker. "We have now estab- lished, by talking to other associates of Jami's at the time of her disappearance, that she was positively seen in the downtown Oshawa area at about 3 p.m. on the day she disappeared," Det. Parker said. "We now know, almost to a certainty, that Jami made it to Oshawa and wad there for some time before she vanished." varying degrees, for a long time. As a uniform officer he took some of the initial reports of the woman's disappearance in 1997, and he feels a responsibility to Jami's mother and son to bring the matter to a conclusion. "We want to know what happened to Jami for our- selves as police officers, and for her family," Det. Parker said. "They deserve to know what happened to her." A special hotline for tips in the Jami Furnandez case has been set up at 905-579- 1520 ext. 4297. Det. Parker and his team want to hear from anyone who saw anything at all sus- picious in the areas Jami was last seen. Investigators are focusing on the area of Colburne St. near Simcoe St. in the area of police headquarters in Oshawa around 3 to 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 15, 1997 and around the -area of Port Perry on the morning of Oct. 15, 1997. Anyone who believes they may have sighted Jami Furnandez, who is described as stocky in build with shoulder length hair, is asked to called the hotline or Crime Stoppers at 1-800- 222-TIPS. Connie Magiag is haunted by the 1997 dis- appearance of her daughter, Jami Furnandez. son, the wait goes on. "He (Stefan) asks about his mother and I tell him she is away and we don't know where she is," Mrs. Magiag said. "She was good with Stefan, and she was so proud of him. We just want to know where she is, and what happened." Police wish to hear from anybody with any information. "No information is too Parker said. "Tell people to call us, no matter how insignificant they think it may be." For police and family members, the story of Jami Furmandez ends abruptly in 1997 with a stone wall of mystery; for Stefan Furnandez, who is five years old, the story begins with a question: "Where is my mom?"
