"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, July 4, 2001 - 9 - = Canada Day celebrations . Tees AY hd) ! A ®e ~ 0» CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR Despite the inclement weather, Durham MP Alex Shepherd was on hand at Palmer Park last Sunday morning to host his annual Canada Day celebrations. Cold, rainy and windy weather kept the crowds away for the most part, but Mr. Shepherd and friends still offered up free food and refreshments to the public to mark our nation's birthday. As part of the festivities, War of 1812 heroine Laura Secord (Bobbie Drew) and Sir John A. MacDonald, Canada's first Prime Minister (played by Dave Ellis) made their way throughout the downtown park. Caller identifies self as a police officer Beware of giving out info over the phone: Police By Rik Davie The Star Police are warning the public in the North Durham area about calls coming from someone impersonating a police offi- cer. . Several persons have received calls asking for information about residents of the home. The caller identifies himself as a police officer and uses the name of a well known township official. In at least one case, the caller said he had bad news about a resident of the home. Durham Regional Police at 26 Division are investigating the calls and Insp. Bill Temple, commander of the North Durham division, is taking the matter very serious- ly. "It is against the law to impersonate a police officer in order to gain an advantage over an individual," Insp. Temple said. "That is, to gain information that would not normally be given." Insp. Temple said that persons receiv- ing such calls should do several things. "Firstly, ask that you call the officer back at the Durham Regional Police number (579-1520)," Insp. Temple said. "A police officer will have no problem with doing that or with proving his identity before you give any information." Insp. Temple said if you are in doubt use *69 to find out where the calls are com- ing from. "If you have any doubts what-so-ever, call the police," Insp. Temple said. "Above all, do not give out personal information over the phone. A real police officer will have no problem with you hesitating to give personal information on the phone." Anyone receiving such a call should contact the Durham Region Police at 905- 579-1520. ' PORT PERRY STAR -- TT -- TAG WORTH BACKBAY \ = OUTFITTERS FISHING TACKLE & OUTERWEAR Hunt is on.
