As a result of this report, and the fact that all road infrastructure grants and subsidies to municipalities have ceased and that none of the tax funds are returned to small com- munities, local council- lors prepared a resolu- tion last week which would see a portion of the funds generated in Scugog through fuel sales be refunded. In their resolution, council "petitions the Province of Ontario to dedicate $0.02 of its 50.147 per litre Provincial Fuel Tax and the Federal Government to dedicate $0.02 of its $0.10 per litre Federal Excise Tax to the mainte- nance and construction of municipally owned and operated road infra- structure." Endorsing the resolu- tion was Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt: "We can try and get some mileage out of this. It shows what happens here in a small municipality," he said, referring to how much money is forwarded to government coffers through fuel taxes. Councillors also agreed to forward their resolution to area munic- ipalities, Durham Region officials, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, and Durham MPP John O'Toole and Durham MP Alex Shepherd.
