20 - PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, July 4, 2001 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" By Florence Ashton Ashburn news On Sunday morning we wel- comed to Burns pulpit Katherine McCloskey, a student minister from Knox College, in the absence of our minister Graeme lllman who is on vacation during July. Next Sunday, July 8 a repre- sentative from the Gideons will be with us. Social hour will be continued over the summer months. Sunday worship hour is 10 am. We welcome all who would like to join with us. Sunday evening church ser- vices at Glen Major are now in progress continuing until Labour Day Weekend. Time of service is 7:30 p.m. Brooklin Horticultural Society held their regular meeting and rose show at Brooklin United Church last Wednesday, June 27 with an excellent attendance. This was a gala affair as they cel- ebrated their 80th year. How proud we are to have a garden club that has successfully contin- ued all these many. years. Congratulations. It is most grati- fying to have so many new peo- ple become members and taking such an active part. The church hall was tastefully decorated with balloons, beauti- ful floral displays from local gar- dens, pictures and of course what's a birthday celebration without the birthday cake. President Judi Denny so capably conducted the evening with a special welcome to all former past presidents. In attendance was Margaret Davis, who joined the society in 1961, also Eleanor McCallum, Lois Daw, Ken Brown, Bill Burgess, Veronica Sliva, Gordon Wick and Sue Holt. Regrets were sent from past president John Jeffries and a let- ter of congratulations read from Valerie Hundert of B.C. It was most fitting that Margaret Davis had the honour of cutting the anniversary cake. Speaker for the evening was Brooklin Horticulture Society marks 80th year Bob Wildfong who gave a most interesting slide presentation and commentary on heritage seeds. There were a total of 87 entries on the show bench. Truly a beautiful show in spite of the hot weather. Maria Cavallari, a new member, won the special award for the best red rose. Once again, Mary Housego won the best decoration with a crescent design moonlight and roses. No award for the white rose. Congratulations ladies. The annuals show will be held Aug. 22 which is the big show for the year. Druward Gribble will address 'the subject bringing your garden indoors. In the meantime, just enjoy the beauti- ful outdoors and the fun and pleasure of working in your gar- den. Sunday, July I, was a fun day for those that gathered at Ashburn Park to celebrate Canada's 134th birthday. Once again we sincerely thank the community centre board and their volunteer helpers for mak- ing this all possible for us to enjoy, even though we were almost swept off our feet with the high winds that prevailed for a few hours. However, the cooling temperature was a real treat to the several hot days we experi- enced. Madeline, John McCabe We were greeted to the church service on Sunday by Neil and Jean Hunter. The church was beautifully decorated with flow- ers. Thanks to those who provid- ed them. The ministry of music was enjoyed with the beautiful singing of Denise Jeffrey and Randy Watson. We welcome Eva Hunter as guest organist for the month of July. Fireworks rescheduled for this Saturday evening Mother Nature once again rains on Caesarea's holiday plans By Albert Putsey Caesarea News Another weekend was not pleasing to the Caesarea Ratepayers Association. We had the fireworks lined up for Saturday night and again the weather turned against us. We are still licking our wounds over our yard sale, which had to be post- poned for two weeks at the end of May due to weather as well as another commitment. I'm glad to say that we are prepared for this coming Saturday, July 7 at 7:30 p.m. to accommodate this event to honour Canada's birthday. It really did rain, but the bright side of it is that I didn't have to water the flowerbeds. You see, there is always a bright side to everything. Our favourite chef will not be on hand, so we need a good volunteer to flip the ham- burgers. Lake Scugog Historical Society This Sunday afternoon from | to 4 p.m. is the annual garden party at the Island Museum. Come out and see what an inter- esting afternoon there is in store for you and the family: entertain- ment, memorial walk, museum tour, and you can show you appreciation for those who have worked so hard to keep the museuin as a legacy. There will be special exhibits by the Oshawa Camera Club and refreshments will be served. You'll meet the new directors and our new curator. Blackstock and District Lions Club We had a very busy Sunday, first, getting our lion onto the trailer for the Williams Point Canada Day Parade in the momn- ing amid the raindrops, then again that afternoon, we paraded the lion in the )Janetville Canada Day Parade. At times it felt as though the wind was just going to pick up the lion off the trailer and send it into a nearby field, how- ever, the tie-downs held. This Friday and Saturday evening you'll find us flipping hamburgers at the Blackstock Tractor Pull. Lion Ken Hudson will be host- ing the director's meeting at his home on July 18 beginning at 7 p.m. Bruce and Eleanor Colwell cel- ebrate their anniversary on July 9 as do Carter and Donna Roberts on July 11. Happy birthday to Sandra Holdsworth on the third. Our congratulations and best wishes. Pine Ridge Garden Club We met Tuesday, July 3 under the canopy at the Nestleton Ball Diamond to enjoy our annual cook-out, followed by a short meeting of coming events. We all had a great time. Joke of the Week The preacher was offered $500 from the saloon owner and his group of gamblers. The deacon said, "Don't touch it. It's devil money." The preacher-replied, "The devil has had it long enough. Now, let's see what the Lord can do with it." Regarding (Reg. Stan and Minnie) and how they came to Canada. We should appreciate how we got our start and be thankful. Sorry to report that Mrs. Jean Smith (Ward) is a patient in a Toronto hospital. She is a former Greenbank girl. Wish you a speedy recovery. Congratulations to Madeline and John McCabe on receiving the Lloyd Lee "Citizen of the Year" award from the Lions Club last Wednesday. It is 33 years since they arrived in Greenbank to raise their family and support all the functions in the village. They are the proprietors of our famous bake shop and restau- rant. The July euchre at the hall will be held on Friday, July 13. All wel- come to comé and have a good time and a social evening. By Clara Dowson Scugog Island News The weatherman played tricks on us at Scugog Island United Church, July I, therefore service had to be conducted inside. Rev. Lockhart was back in the pulpit after two weeks away and he spoke as though he enjoyed his time hiking, camping out, p etc. The senior choir of which Gloria Fralick is their leader with the help of her sister Marilyn on the keyboard, was greatly enjoyed by all. The decorations for Canada Day were so nice. The congregation sang O'Canada and also happy birth- day to Canada. Next Sunday, July 8, weather permitting, will be outside and special music will be supplied by Bruce Gerrow and Nelson Reader. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. |. Gavey from Chandler Drive on the birth of their daughter on June 25 and who was a guest of honour at church on Sunday. I made an error last week.
