"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Changing of the guard PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, July 4, 2001 - § By Rik Davie Port Perry Star A changing of the guard among the region's top cops is seeing the upper Durham Regional Police Service filled with some of North Durham's best known officers. On Tuesday morning, Port Perry's Chuck Mercier/ was sworn in as Deputy Chief of the ser- vice along with a former Peel Region officer. He too will serve as a deputy chief. When Mr. Mercier, the former inspector of 26 Division, takes his seat as the deputy comman- der of the 700 member service, he will be joined by two officers whose reputation in the north is known to all. Staff Sgt. Mike Ewles, the former Staff Sgt. of 26 Division (he's now sta- tioned in Oshawa) will take the rank of inspector along with friend and fel- low 26 Division graduate Staff Sgt. Dietmar Schoenrock. Both men will take on the task of duty inspector in a new system that will ranks of the see changes in how staffing and major inci- dents are handled in the region. The duty inspector will work the same shifts and hours as the pla- toons to which they are assigned and will be on duty in the region 24 hours a day. "It will allow us to operate with an overview of the staffing needs in the region," Insp. Ewles said. "Because we are working with the same shift all the time, we will know the strengths and weakness in each area on a given shift and make changes accordingly." As well, both Insp. Schoenrock and Ewles see a benefit for the offi- cers. "We will be with offi- cers at major occurrences and we are not there to micro-manage," Insp. | Schoenrock said. "We are there to see that officers at the scene have access to the specialty units they may need and we will see first hand how officers handle critical situations." Insp. Ewles said hav- North Durham officers joining the upper ranks ing duty inspectors "mar- ried to a particular shift" will improve communica- tion between the ranks. "It hasn't always been what it could be," Insp. Ewles said. "This can only help by putting us out there with officers on a regular basis." Insp. Schoenrock has worked in the Tactical Support Unit as team leader and unit leader and in the Intelligence Unit, and his experience with the Public Order Unit will be put to use as it falls under his com- mand. Insp. Ewles has worked in every division in the region except Clarington and was a team leader on the Tactical Support Unit under Insp. Schoenrock. "As duty inspectors we will bring the TAC (Tactical Support Unit) experience of having handled hundreds of gun calls," Insp. Schoenrock said. "The whole process of duty inspector will give the citizens of the region a more timely response process when a major incident occurs." pal Dietmar Schoenrock, left, and Mike Ewles, both former Staff-Sergeants with 26 Division here in North Durham, have been promoted to duty inspectors. They've joined former North Durham Inspector Chuck Mercier on the list of 26 Division officers who have been promoted to the upper ranks recently.
