"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 10, 2001 - 3 Friday evening kick-off New-look summer fest arrives this weekend By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Port Perry's midsum- mer festival has once again undergone some minor tinkering, but still promises to be fun for the whole family. A partnership between the Scugog Chamber of Commerce and the Business Improvement Association has been formed for the 2001 event, which will kick off this Friday evening. Known as Festival Days for years, this edition of the annual fun fair has been deemed Street Fest as part of the changes. The fun will begin on Friday (July 13) night at the Great Blue Heron Festival Tent, located in the Palmer Park parking lot. Tragically Hip tribute band The Wheat Kings will headline the event, which will also feature an opening performance from Mr. Machete. The tent opens at 8 p.m., with the entertain- ment beginning an hour later. Tickets are $5 each, and those wishing to pur- chase alcoholic beverages must show valid photo identification. The following morning, Street Fest officially kicks off with a wide variety of activities and games for all ages. Registration for the Mutt Show gets under way at 9 a.m., the competition will begin a half-hour later at the gazebo in Palmer Park. Prizes will be hand- ed out. The competition is open to those 14 years old and younger. At 9:30 a.m., the mayor and councillors breakfast will begin at the Great Blue Heron tent, and will run until 11 a.m. At that time, the kids' "Street Fest" parade will begin. It'll make its way from the Royal Bank to Palmer Park, where prizes will be handed out out. It's open to those aged 2 to 10. Following the parade, a Teddy Bear Picnic and Contest will be held in the park. Also at Il am. a live auction will be held on the Queen St. stage in front of the Port Perry Post Office. Items have been donated from local mer- chants, and all proceeds will go towards the Scugog Information Centre Community Access Program. Saturday afternoon will also feature a wide range of games and contests in Palmer Park, from a baby derby (12:30 p.m.), kids' bike rodeo (I p.m.), hot dog eating contest for teens (1:30 p.m.) and a Double Bubble bubble blowing contest (2 p.m.) Also planned are a kids' challenge, complete with a hula-hoop contest, obstacle course relay, shoe toss, limbo contest, sack races and other games, at 2:30 p.m. a watermelon seed-spitting contest at 4 p.m. and a pie-eating competition at 4:30 p.m. Throughout the day, visitors to Street Fest will also be encouraged to enjoy inflatable rides and games and miniature golf, among other fun activi- ties. A pay-one-price pass for the inflatable rides and games is $10 for those I3 years and younger or S15 for teens and adults. Single tickets are $2 for youth and $5 for those older 13. For Saturday, event organizers have arranged to have Queen St. closed from Perry St. to Water St, and Water St. closed to Mary St. With that, local merchants and others will have the chance to take their merchandise out- doors and onto the street, offering up a sidewalk sale atmosphere. Unlike other years, there will be no mer- chants and vendors from outside the township sell- ing their wares at this year's midsummer festi- val. As the day draws to a close, the Great Blue Heron tent will once again be the place to be as Superfreak, a disco revival band, take to the stage. Burt Reynold's Mustache will open for them. The bands will kick off at 9 p.m. Again, tickets are $5 each and the tent will be licensed to serve alco- hol. Things will be quiet downtown on Sunday, as the only activity planned is Port Perry's first annual Outdoor Antique Show, which will be held in the Great Blue Heron tent. Admission to the show , which is sponsored by the Scugog Shores Historical Museum, will be $3.
