8 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 10, 2001 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" A Events added to schedule Busier Highland Games are promised By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Changes are in store for the Highlands of Durham Games when the sixth annual Celtic celebration is held later this month. Held each summer for the past five years in Scugog and neighbour- ing Uxbridge Township, the Games will kick off a week early in 2001, when fully-sanctioned sheep dog tri- als are held at the farm of Dr. Fred Cotie on Blue Mountain Rd. They'll be held July 21 22. Following that, the annual Tartan Golf Classic will be held at the Royal Ashburn Golf Club on July 25. Proceeds from the event will be shared by the Scugog and Uxbridge libraries, as well as the Highlands of 'Durham Games committee. On July 27, the annual pipe band tattoo will be held at the Carolyn Best ball diamonds, located just behind the Scugog Arena on Reach St. The event will be sponsored by the Great Blue Heron Charitable Casino. Gates will open at 6 p.m., and the bands will begin the show at 7 p.m. when they parade guests onto the field. Opening ceremonies will get under way at 8 p.m., followed by a special performance by the 78th Fraser Highlanders, "who will be joined by six other bands. The next day action shifts to Elgin Park in Uxbridge, where the actual heavy games are held. New for 2001 will be darts, and a pipe band com- petition on the afternoon of July 29. The competition will feature the best Grade | and 2 bands in the province. Also new for this year will be camping, which will be available at the Uxbridge/Scott Museum, a short distance from Elgin Park. A single-malt cigar tent and a small-town reunion tent will also be introduced in 2001. The popular Heavy Games will! also return this year, as will such events as Highland cattle shows and Highland dance competitions. Vendors will also be on site. Providing the entertainment this year will be The Sons of Maxwell, who will perform the evening of July 28 at the Uxbridge band shell, and Cape Breton sensation Kilt on the afternoon of July 29.
