Grandiflors Rose - Betty Alex Shepherd, MP for Durham, is outraged that the Harris government is restricting OHIP billing for audiologists performing hearing tests. "Who is going to get the short shrift, the elderly and children from families with low and middle incomes, the people who are always victims of Premier Harris' policies," Mr. Shepherd said. The Harris government announced that effective Aug. 13 it will delist OHIP coverage for hearing tests and that audiologists will have to work under the direct supervision and in the same premises as ear, nose and throat doctors in order to bill OHIP. The MP said doctors will become a go between in accessing the OHIP sys- tem, charging a billing fee and rutting money into their own pockets without providing a service. "It also means a direct referral from a doctor which is time consuming and grossly inefficient for the patient," he said. Mr. Shepherd, who suf- fers from a hearing disabili- ty, doesn't understand the 'need for this because under the Regulated Health Professions legisla- tion audiology isn't a dele- gated medical act but a practice unto itself. He said the provincial government looks very when, on the one hand, provincial legislation says foolish contradicting itself MP 'outraged' over OHIP delisting Shepherd audiologists are members of a profession, and in an about face the province says under the Health Insurance Act, audiologists have to be supervised by doctors. Audiologists in all other provinces do not have to practice under a doctors supervision. "This imposition placed on the hearing impaired is nothing short of callous and reflects the continued disregard Premier Harris has for the health and wel- fare of Ontarians," Mr. Shepherd said. Mr. Shepherd said the legislation the province is using to do this has been on the books for 31 years and the province choosing to enforce it now shows the tremendous amount of influence the doctors have over the Harris govemn- ment. "It's sad this influence is being used to the detri- ment of the people of Ontario as they witness the erosion of their health care services," Mr. Shepherd said. Deeth.
