"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 17, 2001 - 1 They're takin' it to the streets RoadWatch program targets speeding with technology By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Members of a commu- nity group have made an investment they hope will lead to safer roadways in North Durham. Motorists continue to exceed speed limits, and members of the volunteer road safety group RoadWatch are deter- mined to put that to an end. RoadWatch Scugog has ponied up nearly $4,000 for a radar board. Set up beside the road, the device will display the speed of oncoming traffic, letting drivers know how fast they're travelling. It is hoped that similar groups in Uxbridge and Brock will share the cost of the radar board, enabling it to be used throughout North Durham. "We want people to get the message that we don't want them driving fast in our neighbourhoods," said Fred Heap, chair of the local RoadWatch commit- tee. Last Wednesday mom- ing, Mr. Heap, Jim Hall and Bill Henshall - all volun- teers with the group - set up the newly acquired radar board on Simcoe St., just north of the lights at the Reach St. intersection. In 40 minutes, the three men had taken down the license plate numbers of 15 motorists who were clocked going between 70 and 90 kilometres an hour in the 50 km/h zone. That information will be forwarded to Durham Regional Police, and offi- cers will send warnings out to the owners of the vehi- cles. Basically, that's how the RoadWatch program works, said Mr. Heap. Anyone noticing a motorist driving quickly or in an unsafe manner is encour- aged to take down infor- mation on the vehicle -- most importantly the license plate, date and time - and leave the form at any one of a number of stores where they are accepted. Police will look over the complaint, and if required, send a warning letter out to the vehicle owner. A second report may result - Scugog RoadWatch chair Fred Heap with a radar speed sign his group hopes to use in its battle against speeding drivers. and a third complaint could result in a ticket. "I think the RoadWatch message is getting out there; people are getting fed up with other people's driving," said Mr. Heap. "People drive so aggressively these days; it's like you're taking your life into your hands when your drive down the street anywhere. Some people just don't pay any atten- tion whatsoever to speed limits." It is hoped that neigh- bourhood groups interest- ed in trying to combat speeding on their streets will take advantage of the new radar board. It is avail- able to any group for two days, at no cost. Already, one resident on King St. in Prince Albert has shown an interest, said Mr. Heap, who expects to see the board set up there this week. Anyone interested in acquiring the radar board is asked to contact Constable Lee Smith at at 905-579-1520, extension 2685.
