Alex Sosna, lawyer for the two accused, told The Star the 49-year-old man, who is rumoured to be in poor health, "could not be accommodated by courthouse staff." Mr. Sosna said his client's health was not a factor in his failure to appear Monday. "It was an issue of manpower from what I know," Mr. Sosna said. Durham Regional Police Det. Kate Lang, said the investigation is far from over. - "There are a lot more interviews to be conduict- ed," Det. Lang said. "This is a complicated case, and we are still gathering facts." Det. Lang would not comment on the possibil- ity of yet more charges in the case. The accused woman and her spouse were remanded in custody until Thursday of this week, when Mr. Sosna expects to provide a surety acceptable to the court for the couple's bail of $10,000, set last week. Mr. Sosna told The Star he is concerned for the safety of his clients. "Because of the nature of the charges, there have to be safety concerns for them," Mr. Sosna said. "I am satisfied that my clients' safety is being addressed by (staff at the Whitby Jail)," Mr. Sosna said. "But anyone charged with these types of offenses, regardless of whether they are in cus- tody or not, would be very concerned." The parents are charged with two counts each of: | a Forcible confine- ment a Failure to provide the necessities of life a Assault Q Assault with a weapon, and a Aggravated Assault The mother of the boys is further charged with administrating a nox- ious substance. Within minutes of her appearance Monday, the mother was whisked from court cells back to the jail in Whitby. RIDE check helps cops nab suspect Durham Regional Police conducting a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) spot check on Hwy. 7A at the causeway Sunday night got more that they bar- gained for with one traffic stop. A breathalyzer test resulted in charges of operating a motor vehicle while exceeding the legal blood-alcohol limit for the man. 'A further investigation showed the man was wanted on several out- standing provincial war- rants. The accused was arrested to be held for a bail hearing in Oshawa on Monday. The RIDE check east of Port Perry saw more 300 vehicles stopped between 1:15 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. on Monday, July 16. Only one impaired charge was laid, and one 12-hour suspension was issued.
