McClelland, Rik Davie Editorial Comment An encouraging reaction Councillor Dietlein and Mayor Moffatt clean up The Pits! As horrifying as the allegations of child abuse levelled against a Blackstock couple recently were, the response of the community has been heartening, indeed. Soon after reports of the allegations became public, OUR WORN HERE 'S DONE! Blackstock and Scugog were swamped; news crews rolled CC in, intent on reporting the story. Inevitably, their reports focused on the sharp contrast between the seriousness of ' the charges laid against the couple, and the pastoral nature ry Io of the rural community in which the acts supposedly took [ke . place. | amohiP It would have been natural for residents here to react negatively, as the depictions of the community were certainly R negative. Instead, you have responded with openness and WaTch Edel ES compassion. : | fLYING This newspaper has received many letters expressing sincere regret that such an occurrence may have happened among us. The tone of the letters, rather than being vindictive and targeting the accused in the matter, have been full of wishes for the well-being of the children, and hopes for their future. Meanwhile, a group of youngsters, aiming to prove "Blackstock Cares", launched a campaign to raise money for the youngsters, and to send them cards expressing the concern of the community. As of the beginning of the week, they had raised $1,800 in just a few days, and collected numerous signatures. Also encouraging have been signs that people are willing to let the allegations of abuse make their way through the 2 courts; due process must be followed, and we are all Se hopeful that the process proceeds expeditiously. Where shock, anger and a thirst for retribution could have sprung, there has been instead compassion and concern. And that is encouraging. KAPPA 'Port PERRY STAR Remember When? Historical photo feature by J. Peter Hvidsten Buildings known as "Crystal Palaces" of one size or another were very common at fairs all over Ontario before 1900, and this one was located at the Ottawa Central Fair. Port Perry's Crystal Palace was built about 1895 and was described as the largest, most imposing and magnificent building in town. The building was said to have been the pride of the town, and was without peer in the Dominion for capacity and convenience for fair exhibits. No photo of the building has ever been located, and the building burned to the ground in Nov. 1904, leaving it a mystery of local history. Anyone who may know anything about the Port Perry Crystal Palace, please contact Peter at 905-985-7383. LETTERS Not all grads were listed To the Editor: I was very disappointed to read the Seagrave news column titled, "Congratulations to all Seagrave area graduates." I am a resident of Seagrave, as well as a Grade 8 graduate of R.H.Cornish Public School. When | read the column | was happy to hear the congratulations to my fellow neighbours. | kept reading on in the column in hopes to see my name along with my other friends who are also Grade 8 graduates not mentioned. When I didn't, | was a little let down. Then | read the part that says, "Every effort was made not to leave out any graduates but our apologies to any graduates not mentioned. " But I don't think that every effort was made. The author could have easily found out that | was graduating, but she didn't. Anne Sandiford has written in the past and was writing about the R.H.Cornish school choir. She did not know all the names of the residents of Seagrave that were in the choir so, she called me, a member of the choir, to find out the correct names. She did this so that she would not forget to mention anyone, as the author did this time. There are not many people in Seagrave that were mentioned, but rather the people in Robinglade and Mariposa were written about. If they continue to talk only about these areas, maybe they should change the name of the news column to "Robinglade News" instead of "Seagrave News". I would just like to extend con- gratulations to Erin Hughson, Kathy Wanamaker, Melissa Weishuhn,Casie Lee,Brody Campbell,Matt McGarry and Justin Smith of Seagrave ,who were peo- ple that 1 know were not men- tioned. Perhaps next time, the author will do the research needed for her report. Shelley Davies Seagrave
