- - 2 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 24, 2001 Canadian Blood Services officials have turned to emergency ser- vices staff this month in an effort to reach their goal of collecting 700 units of blood. Dubbed the 911 Give Blood Challenge, Canadian Blood Services have issued a challenge to all police, ambulance and fire departments in the south Central Ontario area. Both sworn and civilian emergency ser- vices staff are eligible, as well as friends and family. Pledge cards have been distributed to all emergency services staff, and local representatives will have their chance to take up the challenge this Thursday (July 26), when a blood donor clinic is held at the Scugog Community Centre on Reach St, between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. However, challenge participants may attend any blood donor clinic in the month of July to have their donation counted. All participants will be asked to sign in at the registration site of the blood donor clinic, and to provide their name, divi- "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" 'Emergency' blood clinic taking place this week in Port Perry sion and particular emer- gency service. Generally summer time is among the times of the year when blood donations are in high need, and Canadian Blood Services officials have set a target of 700 units for this month. To make the challenge fair, each emergency ser- vices department will compete against other divisions of similar size. There will be three cate- gories: staff size of 200 or more; a staff size of 100 to 199 people; or a staff of less than 100. As well, members of the public are also encouraged to attend the clinic this week. The process takes about an hour, and the majority of "clinics now book appoint- ments. Potential names for creek to be discussed Township officials have scheduled a public meeting for Wednesday night, which will feature iscussions on the yet-to-be-named creek which runs under Port Perry. Preliminary plans for the restoration of the creek will be available to the pub- lic between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. on July 25 at the Scugog Council chambers, located in the municipal offices on Perry St. Kawartha Conservation Authority officials and Township staff will be on hand to discuss the creek, which begins near the retention pond near the Victorian Village subdivision. From there, it trav- els underneath most of the downtown core of Port Perry, includ- ing under the Station One fire hall and the local IGA and through the former Queen St. bowling green before entering Lake Scugog at the public boat launch. From time to time the creek clogs up, and plans have been made to stabilize the creek. Both Scugog Township and the KCA will work togeth- er on this project.
