"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 24, 2001 - 3 Abuse case could take a year to make court Bizarre media chase unfolds as two released By Rik Davie Port Perry Star The accused in the Blackstock child abuse case stumbled across a parking lot to their lawyer's luxury sedan, coats drawn over their heads, after being freed on $10,000 bail Thursday. The couple, a 49-year- old man and his wife, 40, are expected to go to trial within six months to a year on numerous charges. It is alleged they kept their teenaged sons confined in cage-like cribs, and mis- treated them in other ways. They will be staying with family friends outside of the township. There was a heavy media presence at the King St. courthouse for the couple's bail hearing Thursday. They had been held in custody since their arrest July 5. A bizarre scene unfold- ed outside the courthouse as the, accused, free on bail, were swarmed by reporters. The adopted mother of the boys, who is charged with numerous offenses, stumbled blindly across the parking lot with a jack- et concealing her face. She cried out to the horde of reporters, "Leave me alone, please leave me alone!" The woman nearly walked directly into traffic with the coat pulled tightly over her head as her hus- band yelled from the wait- ing car: "Turn left ------ : turn left, over here!" The woman was eventu- ally directed to the back seat of lawyer Alex Sosna's sedan. The 49-year-old adopt- ed father yelled something at photographers and then thrust his false teeth at them in a seemingly defi- ant gesture as the car whisked the couple away. The couple headed to the home of two people described as "family friends" Peterborough after Justice of the Peace Jack Wiley approved bail for them during Thursday's hearing. The bail conditions forbid the accused to return to their home just outside Blackstock. It was at that rented house that Children's Aid workers and police removed the cou- ples' adopted sons, aged 14 and 15, on June 29 after receiving a tip that the children were being mis- treated. The couple surrendered to police a few days later. bet The baby Hs; «which: police allege served as cages in which the boys were confined, had been removed from the home.
