It is the seventh consecutive week now that the Palmer Park swimming hole has been posted. Tests taken by health department staff revealed high bacteria counts, and the health unit has recommended that the beach not be used for swimming. Lakeside Beach at Goreski's Resort on Scugog Island is still safe to swim in, say health officials. As well, Elgin Park in Uxbridge also remains posted. Two beaches in Oshawa and Ajax were also deemed unsafe. Water tests are taken from each of Durham Region's 16 public beaches on a weekly basis. The tests are sent to a ministry lab in Peterborough, and then retumed to the regional health office. The suspect, whom police describe as having been "involved in com- munity activities", was charged after a man, now 19, came forward with the allegations. He reported having a sexual relation- ship with the accused man that began five years ago, when the alleged victim was 14, police said. Durham Regional Police media officer Dave Selby said the accused met the alleged victim through the Port Perry Army Cadet Corps. It is alleged the accused "would often give the vic- tim gifts like bicycles, stereo equipment and a watch. "The friendship allegedly developed into a sexual relationship," said the media officer. The accused man appeared in an Oshawa court for a bail hearing Thursday. He was relez .ed into the custody of a friend on a $5,000 surety with conditions that he not reside at his Port Perry address, not be in the company of anyone under the age of 18 without an adult pre- sent, and he not volun- teer for any community activity. Richard Farrington, 52, of Port Perry, is charged with one count of sexual exploitation. Police are asking any- one with about this case to contact Det.
