Numerous reports surface throughout any given year of van- dalism, thefts, and nuisance behaviour; unfortunately, the finger of blame is often pointed at young people, who tend to congregate, sometimes in large numbers. We've long said that kids have as much right as anybody to gather and hang out; but developments of late in the area of the ~ Water St. business section represent another matter altogether. Business owners report constant hassles with kids who gather near their store fronts, hindering passersby and, according to the merchants, affecting business. Residents, we're told, are afraid to venture out for fear of being confronted by rough-talking, bad- acting teens. The situation boiled over last week, when the owner of a Water St. restaurant tried to chase a bunch of loitering kids out of his parking lot as the supper hour approached. He was, according THE HIGHLAND GAMES to reports, swarmed. He wound up with numerous injuries. Had it not been for the intervention of others in the area, his injuries may have been more severe. : Now merchants in the area are demanding police address their problem, as is their right. And police officials here at 26 2 Division tell us they'd love to have the officers necessary to be on / patrol, and to respond immediately when citizen complaints J come in. Ss It's staffing, they tell us; Scugog is a big place, and policing itis |. a big responsibility. Our suggestion is for those concerned to take their case to police headquarters, where decisions about funding and staffing are made. A compelling case by the people who live here could well back up 26 Division officials when they go to the brass, looking for more officers. The bullding was erected LETTERS Derby organizers should've offered refunds to some To the Editor: I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon of July 14 at Palmer Park, with my family participating in the children's games that were part of Street Fest. This is the first year I've spent over four hours at the annual event. We had a blast ! The evening was topped off by attending the Demolition Derby. We paid our $10 entry fee and rushed to the grounds, where we could hear a heat in progress. There were found out, from another fan, that there were only two heats in total. We were at the demolition for approximately five minutes, and paid $10; my son was allowed in free. Thinking this was unfair, | went back to the two people who were collecting the entry fee. man at the gate said, "That's too bad. You should have come earli- er" | was taken aback, and respond- ed with: "You should have informed me that it was nearly over, and | would have made the decision whether to pay $10 to enter. - He said, "Too bad." Our $10 is not a big deal, but multiply that by the number of people there, and we are talking thousands of dollars. Unfortunately we, along with many of our neigh- bours, will no longer be supporting this event. | feel if it continues to be managed in this manner it will not remain an event much longer. At the end of the day, we truly enjoyed the Street Fest; it was the best ever. But the Demolition Derby sponsors should be rebating those who attended their event Saturday night. dagodadal Arc Red RR EN WaT STY, Bot ddd dha NAA ee Ale ; : ¥ dap | politely asked if | could have Ingrid Hilyer in 1885 and was o d In the early year: by Mir.
