"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 31, 2001 - 17 They're only two points behind the Excelsiors The Brooklin Redmen and the St. Catharines Major Athletics played for the second time in five nights at Iroquois Park Arena tonight. The Redmen were playing their second to last game of the season and were three points behind Brampton for first overall. The Athletics had clinched the fourth and final playoff spot. The Redmen were without key players Steve Toll, Shawn Williams, Dan Ladouceur, Ken Millin and Cam Woods. As a result the rest of the team were aware that they had to step up their play a notch. The Redmen got on the board first when Kelly Sullivan scored his first of four on the night with just over two and a half minutes gone in the opening frame. Gary Rosyski added one before the peri- od was over as the Redmen outscored the visitors 2-0 after one period. The Athletics came within one goal as they scored first in the middle frame. The Redmen answered not only that goal but scored three unanswered to preserve the 5-2 lead with the second period winding down. Gary Rosyski and rookie Mike McLellan scored in the final two minutes of the second and the Redmen took a 7-2 lead into the second intermission. The Redmen scored first in the third period as well on a goal by recent acqui- sition Ryan Gray to maintain the lead at 8- 2. The visitors did show a spark of life on their way to three goals in the final frame. At one point the lead was down to 9-5 for the Redmen with five minutes remaining. However, Kelly Sullivan got his third and fourth of the night within a span of 34 sec- Brooklin hangs an 11-5 loss on league-leading Brampton onds late in the game and the Redmen took home the 11-5 win and the all impor- tant two points to climb closer to Brampton for first overall. The Redmen bus leaves IPA at 9:00 a.m. sharp for a 2:00 p.m. game in Cornwall against the Akwesasne Thunder, a win and the Redmen finish in first place overall. The Redmen and Athletics accounted for just three minor penalties the last time they played and on this night refer- | ees McGrath and Cafgana called only one minor, a two minute unsportsmanlike call to Brad MacArthur of the Redmen. The Redmen went with Gee Nash in net for the whole game while the Athletics went with Anthony Cosmo for the dura- tion. This was a good thing because play- er #66 Bob Fisher had to put the goalie pads on as the "official" back-up goalie tonight. Major Series playoff action gets under- way this week. The Redmen will likely host a playoff game this Wednesday, August [, 2001 at IPA, the opponent is to be determined. Stay tuned to local papers and to www.brooklinredmenlacrosse.com for the latest in playoff schedules. Series newcomer and two-time Mosport Late Model champion Brad Corcoran earned a well- deserved third place fin- ish with two more Mosport alumni, Pee Wee Evans and Port Perry's Grant Edwards next to the stirp. Rudy Oppersma (#40) and Darragh Moroney (#5) fin- ished sixth and seventh, respectively. Race winner Maginnis admitted that having points leader Lynch glued to his back bumper made him a little nervous, "I kept looking back and Derek was always there. He got under me a couple of time and made it really tough, but he raced me fair." And the runner-up, who emerged from his #15 Monte Carlo with a blood- ied right hand, confessed to a little intimidation. "It turned into a bit of a contact sport at the end there, but you don't want to get into somebody and take a win that way. This was a good result for both Shane and me." The race was slowed by five caution periods, once to clean up the blown motor of Bob Kish's #78 Cutlass and three times for minor contact spins. The only casualty of the night was the #17 Camaro of Derek Henderson. The #17 suffered severe front end damage when he was turned sideways into the front straight wall early in the contest. The OSLR series makes one more appearance at Mosport Speedway on Saturday, September Ist. s[H]o]AJL B[a[L]s]A cla[n|n[e[s IN] [cle[s]T Alc cli [Ao] T]T[alw][A slo[T[HMs[r[r[elE o[7|n|e|[rjllo[r]u]a slo[riA[YI 7] [sIlA|T[0 cluials|p{sMs|T[A][T]E[N ole|rRME]|L o|s|e[s|E Tlole]s ll Y Pls clule Ef ]B]A clalm|e]o]s N[o] 1A] PlL AlN clojr|T A s|s|E E[n]D[s $00000000000000 $ Independent FULL $ [A \ Service Station ~~ @ AVA : : IE errr iSunys;i| [= MEAT SHOPS | [NEE RRUTOR (3 $ | Hundreds of Meal Ideas | [RAEN ISAAC I GET =Te : OPEN 24 HOURS 4] DRIVE THRU One Aisle 3 oF: 1d £5 WINDOW $§ CarWash : - OPEN LATE 1874 SCUGOG ST. | rhilp Pontiac Buick Lid.
