Pool, park face major budget OVEITUNS By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The wheels may have fallen off plans for a skateboard park here in 2001. Tenders closed on July 20 for the pro- posed Unity Place skateboard park, and all came in over budget, said parks and recreation director Jay Todd. "They (the bids) were quite a bit high- er than we anticipated... with what we had planned, we were told that $35,000 would be sufficient for what the kids wanted to.build," said Mr. Todd. "Howevefy xthe tenders came. in between $75,000 and $89,000. That was quite a shock for us." Four companies - two from Durham Region and two from the Toronto area - entered bids. "I think the process we're going to look at now is to talk with a few council- . lors, the CAO (Chief Administrative Officer Yvonne de Wit) and the skate- board group, and then talk with the group who had the lowest tender and see if we can negotiate and get them to come down lower," said Mr. Todd. The township may look at having the works department do some of the exca- vation work, which may bring the price down, he said. Originally, township officials had planned on spending about $35,000 on the long-awaited project. Over the past three years, a group of skateboard enthusiasts has raised close to $15,000 for the project. The township agreed to kick in $20,000 this year to help see that project become a reality. Plans have been drafted up, and skateboarders are now eagerly awaiting construction at the park site, beside the Scugog Arena on Reach St. Please turn to page 10 . Biindon Ford Emcoln Sales y..
