"Transportation Minister Brad Clark has announced the process for registering and approving vintage plates," said Durham MPP John O'Toole. "This com- pletes the work that began with the passage of my Private Member's Bill late last year. I expect we'll be seeing the first old plates in use on some of Ontario's historic vehi- cles this fall." "Essentially, the owner is asked to send the plates (along with the vehicle registration per- mit) to the Ministry of Transportation for authen- tication," said Mr. O'Toole. "Once the min- istry has approved the plates, it will issue a letter which the owner must bring to the Driver and Vehicle License Issuing Office to apply for plate attachment to the speci- fied vehicle." Last year, Mr. O'Toole intraduced Bill 99, -allaw- . -.-apneuncements ~» = -QR:~ ing the use of Year of Manufacture Plates on historic autos. His Private Member's Bill received speedy passage in the Legislature, with third and final reading last December. "Bill 99 was one of the few pieces of legislation that all parties agreed upon," Mr. O'Toole recalled. "I was pleased to see that my colleagues in the Legislature showed such support for our auto- motive heritage. Those who restore historic vehi- cles strive to ensure their car or truck is complete in every detail." The Durham MPP cred- its the success of his Private Member's Bill to the support of antique car enthusiasts. "I appreciate the positive response from car clubs and indi- vidual owners of vintage vehicles in Durham Riding and across Ontario. They sent me dozens of letters and collected hundreds of names on petitions in favour of Bill 99," Mr. O'Toole said.
