"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 28, 2001 - 17 Most businesses in favour of market From Page 1 market in the downtown," said Mrs. Cerovich. "We just want to make sure it's a true farmers' market. We don't want any crafts or items like that sold here, like a flea mar- ket." Scugog Council has already given its permis- sion for a market to be set up at the local municipal offices each morning. Mrs. Cerovich noted that there were "some con- cerns" with the idea, such as parking and the affect a market would have on area businesses. "We don't want to draw customers away from any- body, we want to enhance the consumers' experience in downtown Port Perry," she said. Saturday "The big concern is bringing something into the community that will turn into a flea market and take business away from those downtown. We want this set up to be a proper farmers' market with fresh produce and baked goods." Other issues included recruiting local farmers willing to sell their wares in town and the hiring of a new staff person at the local tourism office to oversee the farmers' mar- ket as well as other local activities. Just last weekend, the Ontario government announced that it would be investing some $700,000 through the Healthy Futures for Agriculture program to help boost farmers' mar- kets across the province.
