"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 28, 2001 - 3 A 42-year-old man is arrested, charged Port Perry man faces sexual assault charges By Rik Davie Port Perry Star A 42-year-old Port Perry man has been arrested and charged after he allegedly sexually assault- ed his 13-year-old daugh- ter. Durham Regional Police report that they were called to investigate a report around 5:30 p.m. last Thursday. At that time they heard complaints from a |3-year- old female, who stated that she had been assault- ed by her father during incidents that are alleged to have occurred as recent- ly as that morning. Officers have charged the man with one count of sexual assault™and one count of sexual interfer- ence. He was taken into custody and held for a bail hearing last week. No out- come of the hearing was available at press time. No names can be released to protect the identity of the minor child. The case is the latest in a string of sexual assault cases in Scugog and across Durham Region in past weeks. Kinsmen Beach remains posted as unsafe Durham Region health officials have once more declared Kinsmen Beach in Port Perry as unsafe. Recent tests by the Durham Region Health Department have concluded that the local beach, located on Water St. on the shores of Lake Scugog, remains unsafe to swim in due to high bacterial counts. Health officials are urging the public to refrain from swimming, bathing or drinking water from Kinsmen Beach. The local public swimming hole has been deemed unsafe by public health officials for most of the summer. However, tests completed by the health department continue to show that Lakeside Beach on Scugog Island remains safe. Other local public beaches posted by the health depart- ment include Elgin Pond in Uxbridge. In total, seven - of Durham Region's 16 beaches tested unsafe. Health department officials explain that the term posted "is used as a caution to area resi- dents that test results indicate higher levels of bacteria than what is acceptable by the province, therefore swimming is not recommended," Anyone swimming at beaches deemed unsafe by the health department run the risk of eye, ear and throat infections, as well as upset stomachs. The Durham Region Health Department conducts tests at each of the region's beaches throughout the summer. For more information on beach postings, please check out www.region.durham.on.ca.
