"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, September §, 2001 - § Scugog Choral Society set to mark 25 years on stage Local performing group to mark the occasion with special autumn shows By Rik Davie Port Perry Star In 1976 a small group of folks in Port Perry took a bold step when they decided to put on a show for area res- idents at the local town hall. That little group echoed the classic lines of a dozen Hollywood musicals on stage, and, before their eyes, they looked out to see most of their peers and colleagues sitting there and watching in awe. And now, some 25 years later, local residents are still being entertained by the descendants from that small group which has grown to become known as the Scugog Choral Society. The idea for the group came from the dream of Grace Hastings, a local music and voice teacher, and some of her talented students and friends in 1976. Since its initial debut in the mid- 70s, the Choral Society has become an institution that put the music back into Town Hall 1873 and a song in the hearts of Scugog. After 25 years of putting on classic musicals, lesser-known works and even the locally written, scored and performed tale of the pirate lass Anne Bonnie, the Scugog Choral Society is taking time to honour itself and its founding members with a review of its most popular numbers for nine per- formances in November. Beginning with the almost-manda- tory H.M.S. Pinafore by Gilbert and Sullivan, the group has done literally every style of musical performance. They will preform excerpts from many of these past shows including the works of Rogers and Hamerstein, Andrew Lloyd Weber and of course, G&S themselves. A special part of the show will hon- our the many past members as well as the invaluable contribution of Ms. Hastings herself. The group has won innumerable awards over the years and in order to celebrate the right way, dedicated Choral members have been tracking down former members all over the country. Anyone who was missed is asked to call 905-985-4257 and let Judy Anderson know where the heck you've been hiding. Performances are on Oct. 22-25 (matinee) and Nov. | and 2 (matinee). Tickets are expected to go fast for this one so hurry over to Henshall's on Queen St. in Port Perry to grab your tickets when they become available later this month or call Judy for more information. Fire department to begin fundraising effort for defibrillators The Township of Scugog Fire Department is beginning a fundraising campaign for the pur- chase of defibrillators. Over the past few years, there has been an increased demand on the fire department to provide a broader range of emergency med- ical services due to changing demo- graphics, fiscal streamlining and regional amalgamation trends. In the interest of better serving the changing needs of the Township of Scugog, the fire department is beginning the fundraising process of obtaining medical defibrillators for both of our stations. Letters will be sent to business- es and service organizations asking for financial contributions to help meet our goal. Contributions from private citizens would also be wel- . come. The fundraising committee will be holding a community dance on Nov. 17 at the Scugog Centre. Tickets are $15 per person, refresh- ments will be available and also a silent auction will be held. Watch the local papers for further details. Also a 50/50 draw will be held lead- ing up to the dance and the winner will be announced on Nov. 17.
